Is film art?

RealityLicks -> RE: Art (2/9/2008 10:57:42 AM)

Good, I haven't seen a good, "lose yourself in it" kind of show for a while and this might be it.

Saw this and it struck a chord : http://arts.guardian.co.uk/art/visualart/story/0,,2252620,00.html

Gonna try and go midweek but can't be sure.

Making films is typically an art.  Making a particular film is often an instance of applying and progressing the art.

One thing badly mislabelled about art by snobs is that it has to be some sort of high-minded affair.  While it can go in that direction, it's simply a practiced bit, often trying to get closer to some objective.  For building a bridge, it may just be a stronger bridge.  For films, it may just be getting ticket sales; the film itself may be nothing but gay jokes buffered with the occasional fart joke and philliac reference.  But it's still an application and advancement of the art.

I hesitated just long enough to ponder TimeCode 2000 as art.

Gwynvyd -> RE: Art (2/9/2008 11:38:05 AM)

I do not think anyone could convince me that the Film "Clueless" is art.... however movies like "House of the Flying Daggers", and "The Fountain" I concider to be art. The use of light and shadow.. colors... storyline.

But then I am a sucker for chick flicks that make you think.. and as some one said.. subtitled movies. Esp if they are Asian.

All of the colors and symbolism...
yeppers.. looks like it is going to be movie night. I had planned on stirfry and pot stickers anyways.

Never heard of it.. but BladeRunner.... that fits the bill. Way ahead of it's time. The soundtrack is wonderful as well.

GreedyTop -> RE: Art (2/9/2008 1:11:12 PM)

Bladerunner.. definitely one of the best movies!!  I wish I could splurge and get the latest release (directors cut? something like that)

Alumbrado -> RE: Art (2/9/2008 1:24:16 PM)

TimeCode 2000 was shot in one continuous sequence, live on 4 digital cameras, and shown with all 4 tracks on a screen divided in 4...took some doing to follow everything... one you get the knack of dividing your attention 4 ways it is a sarcastic look at pretentious pretty people.

And if you are having Asian food tonight, may I recommend Volcano High to go with?

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Art (2/9/2008 1:25:17 PM)

my sig lines are art.

GreedyTop -> RE: Art (2/9/2008 1:26:11 PM)

love the added sig, Faery!
