I'm not so sure.  While I'd grant that the two are in different environments, it seems that they have something in common: trying to hide from public backlash.  We may be more "civil" today, but people would still rip apart Scientology if they were to profess their views publicly.  Granted, it would probably be in a less violent manner than the Romans would've done to the Christians, but it'd only be a more sanitized version of the same thing.  Anonamous seems to be already doing this despite their relative secrecy.

We'd laugh at them, sure. But we wouldn't *kill them*.

Christianity hid back in its early days, too.  Plenty of stories about how they all went into hiding and had secret-society type meetings in basements and such because the common man thought of them as being a cult.

Scientologists aren't hiding. They're ADVERTISING.

What they're hiding is the "Secrets" of their "Religion". Here's a hint. If your "Religion" only imparts knowledge to you upon completion of arbitrary levels, you might *really* be stuck in a game of World of Warcraft...

Scientology is not a religion. It is and always has been a tax dodge and a sort of giant ponzi scheme. Hubbard wrote Dianetics back in 1950 in order to cash in on the self help movement. His book was a success and at a dinner party attended by several luminaries of the California science fiction community he complained about how much of the book's income was going to taxes. Someone, Ben Bova according to most reports, mentioned that churches were tax exempt. Very soon thereafter the Church of Sceintology was founded with its many levels of membership which allowed Hubbard to make up BS at a reasonable pace .Over time paranoia and being surrounded by complete whackos who believed all the BS he fed them clearly took its toll on Hubbard who was pretty clearly completely insane be the end.

Now of course those in charge of scientology who are simply in it for the money and power are hard to distinguish from the true believers. And I strongly suggest no one go looking too closely:
