Yeah I don't wear them inside.  My parents \taught me better than that, and I don't think it just exists for males.  I fine nothing cute or endearing about women wearing baseball caps.

For me it's force of habit.  The Marines made it abundantly clear covers are not worn inside.

We've fazed into another era.

I grew up to believe it was not proper for males to wear hats inside.
It actually bothers me to see males not remove their hats inside.
Does anyone else find this disrespectful or did we just faze into another era?

We fazed. People get on an airplane in sweatpants now. Unheard of.

Isn't it when under arms not on duty?

kdsub -> RE: Hats inside (2/9/2008 5:17:12 PM)

Hi Ken... you could be right...been a long time... but I remeber it as on duty..as in guard duty. But hell I can't remember where I put my car keys 20 minutes ago

Yeah, hats inside bother me, especially in restaurants.  Oddly though, it's one of those things where I know it bugs me but I don't understand why (other than it is what I was taught).  So, just what is disrespectful about a guy wearing a hat inside anyhow?  I mean, I know it *is* but I don't have a clue as to why.  For that reason, I don't make a big deal out of it though I encourage those I'm in the position to influence to remove theirs.

In the 1940s and 50s wearing a hat meant wearing a hat. Taking it off was a sign of respect perhaps harkening to some sort of 'helmet as a sign of aggressive intent 'connotation.  And dining out meant going into a restaurant with the feel of being a guest in someone else's home.

Today, a ball cap, etc. inside a fast food place is so far removed from that context that is it no longer considered actively displaying bad manners... I have seen one of the nicer steakhouses here in town refuse service to an entire family because their kid wouldn't take off his carefully tilted cap.

Now...how many of you who sat through the classes on military customs and courtesies were told the real story of how the salute was originated, instead of the Hollywood 'Knight lifting the visor' story? (Don't bother Googling, the various DoD websites still have it wrong)[;)]

Was to show that the hand didn't have a weapon in it.   Naval was to tip the hat to show respect to your betters.

Alumbrado -> RE: Hats inside (2/9/2008 5:39:27 PM)

You are half right...[:D]

KenDckey -> RE: Hats inside (2/9/2008 5:39:46 PM)

ROFLMAO   I went to a Renn Faire and one of the groups had set up a ship scene.   I asked the pretty ships Capt where she got her butt.    LOL    She got all indignet.   But I wanted one and her skuttle too.

petdave -> RE: Hats inside (2/9/2008 5:42:12 PM)

That was one of those etiquette rules that never made sense to me, so i just ignored it.  It was also a rule in school that you couldn't wear a hat to class, but i'd give it a shot every once in a while... no matter who i asked, they never had an explanation other than "It's bad manners". Meh. Your arbitrary social constructs do not impress me.

KenDckey -> RE: Hats inside (2/9/2008 5:44:15 PM)

Pet   You odnt wear a hat in a hosp out of respect to the sick and dying.   You don't wear one in a resturant because it hides your face

Hats in classes make it more difficult to see your eyes if they are paying attention or falling asleep.  Also, one method of cheating is to write your answers on the undersid bill of a baseball cap.

GreedyTop -> RE: Hats inside (2/9/2008 6:07:55 PM)

FR~ I never questioned WHY it was considered poor manners,  or disrespect.  I'm a USAF brat.  it just IS. Covers off indoors.  And in all the movies of Bogies era and older (and some more recent) same thing.. the guys always took their hats off.

Conditioning? yeah. but ... by god.. it smacks of disrespect if someone DOESNT take their hat off indoors!

(ok, Im old fashioned...)

SubbieOnWheels -> RE: Hats inside (2/9/2008 6:34:33 PM)

In the book series The Cat Who ... there are "cap-on" diners and "cap-off" eating places. The caps in question are called "feed caps" because they have the names of feed companies printed on them.

My friends' children are not allowed to wear any kind of head covering at school because it might be, or might be taken as, showing a gang affiliation.

gypsyfirefly -> RE: Hats inside (2/9/2008 6:59:49 PM)

Fast Reply to OP:

My Father always took his hat off once indoors (and still does) - restaurant, stores, house, etc.  The only time I ever saw him leave it on was when he was going through chemo, and his hair had started to fall out.

Lots of norms have changed or gone by the way side sadly: thank you, excuse me, please, using a blinker to indicate a turn or lane change.  I am not sure if that means society is just less uptight, more informal or just not bothered by social impoliteness?

< grammar>

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Hats inside (2/9/2008 9:55:58 PM)

to me what you take off or don't doesn't show respect your attitude, your tone of voice and your behavior does.

liketophoto -> RE: Hats inside (2/9/2008 9:58:40 PM)

I remember being told that if I always had a hat on my hair would fall out.
and I thought about the Jewish men who wore yamacas and had a bald spot.
Well I'm not bald yet and I'm not blind from the other thing I was not suppose to do.
