ORIGINAL: ottRopesandKnots Yeah, hats inside bother me, especially in restaurants. Oddly though, it's one of those things where I know it bugs me but I don't understand why (other than it is what I was taught). So, just what is disrespectful about a guy wearing a hat inside anyhow? I mean, I know it *is* but I don't have a clue as to why. For that reason, I don't make a big deal out of it though I encourage those I'm in the position to influence to remove theirs. In the 1940s and 50s wearing a hat meant wearing a hat. Taking it off was a sign of respect perhaps harkening to some sort of 'helmet as a sign of aggressive intent 'connotation. And dining out meant going into a restaurant with the feel of being a guest in someone else's home. Today, a ball cap, etc. inside a fast food place is so far removed from that context that is it no longer considered actively displaying bad manners... I have seen one of the nicer steakhouses here in town refuse service to an entire family because their kid wouldn't take off his carefully tilted cap. Now...how many of you who sat through the classes on military customs and courtesies were told the real story of how the salute was originated, instead of the Hollywood 'Knight lifting the visor' story? (Don't bother Googling, the various DoD websites still have it wrong)[;)]
