Don't forget about "No Child Left Behind"

I'm autistic. I spent my whole school life in special ed. After 2001, I rarely recieved attention from my teachers, and the work became less challenging(not that it was much of a challenge to begin with). Instead of actually being challenged, I finished the pitifully easy work in 15 to 20 minutes, and then sat at the back of the class on my laptop, talking on IRC and reading up on various things, none of which had anything to do with the topics being taught. When I asked to be enrolled in the normal classes so I could take chemistry and calculus, my requests were repeatedly denied. They wouldn't even let me take the normal classes on probationary terms. In 2005 my school's arts programs lost funding, while funding for the athletics team increased.

K-12 education in America is a joke.

Rif's budget is 25.5 million and they distribute 16 million books a year. That's $1.60 per book. Why does Bush want to eliminate such an efficient program?

GreedyTop -> RE: Bush hates Children. (2/9/2008 4:46:27 PM)

cause Bush is a dickwad?

Yes it is....but i suppose thats Bushs fault too eh?

sophia37 -> RE: Bush hates Children. (2/9/2008 4:51:14 PM)

my first thought is, eh, new president, new budget. What gets taken away comes back. The deomocrats will reinstate it if it goes way most likely, but might change the name.

While I'm not (entirely) blaming Bush for it, I strongly agree with this.

We're falling short of international standards (for industrailized countries) while being the most powerful country on Earth.  "AP Calculus" isn't standard- it's the class the "smart kids" take.  Ditto for many of the other AP's.  They don't start taking you seriously as a human being and student until your third year of college.

And, the saddest part?  A lot of kids like it.  The standards are so low that you don't even have to show up to half your classes to get by (unless of course they're one of the dreaded classes that takes attendance).

Wow.  Even my cynical self finds this to be in poor taste on the government's part.

Editted to be fair, as I don't know whose responsibly this is; defaulted to "the government".

wkdshadow -> RE: Bush hates Children. (2/9/2008 5:22:31 PM)

Democrat or Repubican, it's essentially two sides of the same coin.

luckydog1 -> RE: Bush hates Children. (2/9/2008 5:22:53 PM)

shhh Subrob, don't mention facts.  It's Bushes Budget, not the Congress that pssed it.

ShaktiSama -> RE: Bush hates Children. (2/9/2008 5:27:17 PM)

Public education only exists to produce the sort of citizens that the state finds useful.

That's right, better not mention facts. Like the fact that this is in GWB's proposed budget for the next fiscal year. Better keep telling flat out lies claiming the Dems have done something they didn't do. It might take the heat off GWB for trying to remove funding for a genuinely succesful and surprisingly cost effective program.

Don't you get tired of having to lie to try and justify supporting that person? Do you have no self respect? Or is it one of those "lying to the outsiders is fine" things?

luckydog1 -> RE: Bush hates Children. (2/9/2008 5:32:57 PM)

Dom, bush can propose anything he likes, so can you.  The relevant Budget is the one passed by the House of rRpresentatives, then sent to the Senate, then sent to Bush.

Yes, but the question remains why did the proposed budget GWB sent to the hill not contain funding for this program?

You still didn't answer my questions though, why do you tell lies to try and protect GWB?
