Air Passenger Weight Restrictions

Air Passenger Weight Restrictions - 2/12/2008 8:11:54 AM

Status: offline 		I am going to be flying to Italy (From the UK) at the end of August with my partner, Reality1234. I am overweight (not quite in the taking up two seats category) and wondered if there are actual weight restrictions imposed on passengers. The only information I can find online is regarding baggage and having gone to Easy Jet's website their 'contact us' provides only a static question/answer section, with no email or telephone number available to contact them via. Any helpful information would be appreciated.

Status: offline 		There are some airlines in the US (such as Southwest) that will charge you for two seats if you take up that much room.  Other than that airlines have not begun weighing passengers that I know of, and I travel internationally almost once a month.  (I have been in the category of women who push the armrests up with their thighs, much to my chagrin, and my greatest thrill on losing weight was that I no longer did that.)

Status: offline 		CQ, thank you for replying. I have flown previously, the last time was approx. 18 months ago and I am now a stone heavier. I am on a healthy eating/exercise plan (detest the word 'diet') so hoping to lose a fair bit before then, but it got me thinking! I didn't want to turn up at the airport, after booking/paying for our tickets, only to be told I was being imposed an extra fee for my excess weight lol

Status: offline 		Hunk, they are very small, the one thing going for men in that respect is that you tend to have slimmer hips/bums, so the seatbelt goes under the belly if a guy has one, whereas with a woman, it has to go over (painting a lovely picture here!) her belly.

Status: offline 		On smaller aircraft you may be asked to move seats due to weight and balance issues (the aircrafts not yours  ) but on a larger planes I've never seen it be an issue.

I'm a 6'1" 300 pound man who has logged over a million miles in commerical aircraft all over the world and have never been asked to buy another seat. I do however carry my own seat belt extension. You can find them at http://www.extend-its.com/?gclid=CIqQ16uHv5ECFQMsFQod9i8qCA

What a great idea! I've seen cabin crew members scrambling to find an extension for a large passenger. I have never had to pay extra for extra weight (and I was quite large at one time). I have, however, been required to sit in an aisle rather than window seat, and I imagine that was more practical than punitive. It would be difficult to squeeze in between the rows to get to the window seat, and awkward to get out if I needed to go to the bathroom.

Status: offline 		I flew to the UK last march, and to the US in november and neither airline weighed me :)..I cant imagine the extra delay if that were the case, altho it may well happen in the future, blech

So I said, "Are you kidding me, who needs a room, you can sleep if you like, I'm there to enjoy myself and see as much as I can and I can't do that from inside a hotel room!"

Status: offline 		Thank you, Lucy x What prompted my query is that I was recently visiting my mother, who has Sky digital installed, she was watching a programme about an American Airline which did exactly that, charge a woman an excess fee b/c she was overweight. The woman was humiliated, cried til her face swelled up and the upshot was that she could not afford the excess fee, which amounted to as much as another seat.

PROBABLY the airline in question was Southwest Airlines.. as far as I know, theyre the only ones with an active weight-based restriction.

Status: offline 		Provided you aren't carrying anything offensive, I'll sneak you in my luggage!

We're fortunate as Reality's family (his father and that side of the family) are italian and live in the Tuscany region, so costs will be minimal for us and we're only looking at a maximum of £140 in return airfares between us. Apparently, there are also campsites on the beaches which are very cheap, which we may opt for on our next visit when my son joins us.

Status: offline 		So far it's only been ideas floated about as to selling weight capacity on a commercial flight.
Although they do exactly that on some small charter flights, You get XXX lbs total per person that's person + baggage.
Mostly though that's on prop planes and has to do with the actual capacity of the airplane to lift.

And to add, if possible, get an answer in writing as oft I have found what an 'advisor' on  the end of a telephone has said, is vastly different from the official policy at the time.

Also, it would be wise if you ask them to inform you if there are any changes in the future, a letter with contact details should cover you.

Paranoia you might think of me, but from experience I have created these thoughts based upon that, experience.I hold the buggers to their word.

We live now in an age where with airline travel, there is so many considerations to be taken into account and it would seem passenger priorities are falling to the bottom of the list, fuel savings made equals profit made and it seems profit stands higher than passenger priority, especially with the 'no frills' airlines.

I certainly would not think your advice a case of paranoia, I've also seen how policies tend to differ from person to person and it's helpful, as you say, to have it in writing. That way, there can be no quibbles and people are covered for all eventualities.

Oh and one other thought, though I expect yourself not to have this trouble, but do'nt make yourself stand out.

I made the mistake at Xmas, a 'no frills' flight to Sweden with a meagre baggage allowance. The flight was a business flight full of grey suits and laptop cases. I was the long haired 'hippy 'dressed in black leather complete with heavy, 'New Rocks' and accessory chains. Suffice to say, I was the target of the security personnel's interest.

They did not like it when I said a potential security problem could well be in 'camoflage', i.e, a grey suit with a laptop case, not an obvious difference.

But then sometimes I do like to subtedly antagonise.

I'd better go under the radar next time, probably best that way.
