I am sure there are many posts on this site about this topic, some of which I have read and not understood. What does it mean to be a 1950's wife? I thought it ment the stay- at-home mother and wife, to cook and bake cookies and clean the house. I am sure there is more to it then that. Any and all help would be great.

Ironing His shirts, laying out clothes for Him to wear, making the bed, cleaning house, making social arrangements for the two of you, hosting dinner parties for your friends, if there are kids then properly caring for them, seeing them off to school, etc., cook dinner, do the dishes, don't be too loud, keeping the house orderly, greeting Him when He comes home from work, making sure He is comfortable... the list goes on.

I know this sounds a little silly, but have you ever seen the original version of Freaky Friday? The mom and the daughter swap bodies, and the daughter in the moms body had the hardest time keeping up with taking care of the house. It's a cute movie, but you can kind of get an idea of things required from there. I'm sure there are lots of other pop culture references as well, that's just the one i could come with off the top of my head. [:)]

Watch "Mad Men" on AMC for a view of it also! :)  Although, I think it's technically 60s. But it must be early 60s. I am loving that show.

Actually, that's pretty much it.  The part that you left out is tending to the husbands every need and not doing those un-ladylike things like mowing the grass, home repair, changing the oil in the car.  If you wanted to do the strict definition of 1950's, thats it.  The wife is prim, proper, full of social graces but doens't know a phillips from a flathead.

To be blunt, its a concept of how to have a relationship that used to be and maybe never was.  About the only reason why it became associated with D/s is that the 'man of the house' is the one who makes the final decision regarding everything, near as I can figure.  It's only been due to changing times over the decades where that sort of thing (whether real or nostalgically imagined) went from being typical everyday life to being an out-there and unusual way of living, which is really kind of sad commentary on family life over the last few decades if you think about it.

In short, it works for some, not for others, and its fairly rare to find a couple that lives by the strict definition,  but you can find the elements of that idealized life in most D/s relationships if you look at it a certain kind of way.

Wouldn't Leave it to Beaver be a good example of that kind of house? Father knows best or Ozzie and Harriet. I know thats from long ago..

Yep , even I Love Lucy (early ones) is a good example. Early Doris day movies as well.

To pull it off, one would have to find a 1950s husband which is basically one who is true to his wife and manages the household finances!

for me the 1950's housewife is more a state of mind than to be cleaning and doing all those maids stuff
housewives from that age, grown up knowing their roles, and knowing their places and am not talking maids, but they know they exist for man's sake to be by his side making his house confortable and giving him kids and taking care of them for him to make make them men like their father and make their father proud of them,
she gives everything to her man, softness, pleasure, and above all she floods him in love and sacrifices! and he gives her his protection and love and leadership to lead her thru this world wich is very hard on a single woman, and I am talking real woman with the charachteristic of women, softness and tenderness and caring! of course it's very different from being dumb or mindless but thats not our subject now

anyway that's my point of view, I hope I answered your question and made it as clear as possible

The wives on these shows were embarrassed of their husbands. I am not really sure it was consensual, even though they married them. The only one that was half way decent to his wife was George Jefferson, and she could handle him. The other's wives were pretty much beaten down by their husbands over-bearing bigotry and total disregard for women in general.
All of these men gave me perfect examples of the kind of man I DID NOT want in my life.

Hmmm, wonder how african-americans feel re: 1950's housewife style or the 1950's period?  Not a great time for women or minorities.  It does not seem to co-esixt with the idea of a man that wants somone to exchange in "intellectual discourse" or any of the other similar likes and dislikes in the same venue.  1950's household is a fantasy which you can keep.

I've read that site before, for some odd reason I always get this wierd visceral shiver-up-my-spine reaction to it, for no reason I can discern.  Its not the good kind of shiver, either.
