greetings all,

the word "tranny" drives me nuts. just out of curiosity, because i see this term used a lot to refer to transvestite or transsexual people...am i the only person who's extremely annoyed by it? for some reason, it just grates on my nerves. it's like the term "homo" for gay people...it just always sounds perjorative to me, regardless of whether it's meant that way.

also, on a very random note...why are straight people "straight"? does that make us bisexual and gay people crooked?

greetings alumbrado,

i wasn't attempting to decide anything for people. for example, i know plenty of bisexual people who refer to themselves as bi - that sounds as off to me personally as "homo" does (or "subbie" for that matter). doesn't mean i wish to deny them their right to talk about themselves however they want to.

i was just expressing my own personal impression of the word tranny - which is that to me it creates an instinctively negative gut reaction. there are some words that just do not sound right to me, and that is one. i was wondering if i was alone in that, or how commonly it's used and how other people feel about it. i am not in any way attempting to invalidate someone else's labeling of themselves.

OK, thanks for the clarification... I don't know why it resonates with you that way, to me it just sounds like a flippant and somewhat defiant insider term, like 'flamer', 'fag-hag', or 'bro'. It would have to have negative intent to carry a negative connotation to me. (Negatively BTW, is the way I've always heard 'homo' used, so it goes get a rise out of me).

Is there a sense for you that minority groups should be less cavalier with themselves?

no, not necessarily - i guess i'm just sensitive, especially when it comes to language and how people speak. it also kind of bothers me (as a member of a minority group) when minority groups use words that are usually meant negatively towards them cavalierly, just because i feel that in some ways it affects how we view ourselves, if that makes any sense.

sorry, not making much sense on this. in terms of the word tranny specifically, though, i don't have enough experience with it in different contexts to really say. it just personally conjures that feeling in me - it's not necessarily always a conscious thought process (i have instinctive reactions of different kinds to many different words and phrases, not all related to minority groups - some that probably can't even be considered "loaded"), and it may be because i've mostly heard it from people who are not trans and i sometimes get the feeling that it's meant negatively by them (as i do, for example, when i hear the word "homo" used, because my personal experience with it is that most people don't mean it positively or just descriptively). but mostly i am aware that it may just be my own impressions of the word, not anyone's intention or how the word is widely used, which is why i was asking others' opinions/feelings/experiences on the subject.

ahem. sorry if i'm not making much sense, lol. thank you for the question, though - it wasn't the specific direction i was thinking of with the thread but it is very thought provoking.

Made sense to me too.

In the GLBT crowd Transexuals are usualy the most left out group.. and most under represented. The L Word is just now Touching this topic with Max in this and the last season. Most Trans Gender people I know... and I have dated one who thecnicaly was a herm. ( yeah a bit confusing that) prefer the tern Trans Gender. Tranny tends to be a term used by guys who surf the net in search of unusual porn of chicks with dicks.

Some have "Reclaimed" the word since it had negitive connotations. Much like some Lesbians use the term Dyke in a lovingly way. But Gods help you if you are a straight male who calls my girlfriend a Dyke.. LOL

If a Trans Gender person wants to call them self a tranny.. more power to them. Personaly I wont further the stereo type, and use the word. Just like I wouldnt call any other group of people by thier negitive names.

agreed - "tranny" is a horrible word, though like another horrible word - the one given by Randy Marsh as the solution to "people who annoy you" is the one I'm thinking about - if those to whom they might be applied in insult choose to take them for their own, thats fine by me.

Incidentally, I'd bet that "tranny" is also an Australian word for a panel van and a small radio besides.

Well some of the older people call automatic transmissions 'trannys'. But I'm pretty sure its just because they're just far to lazy to say transmission.

can't say i've ever heard "tranny" applied to a panel van (shaggin' wagon, pussy wagon etc yes) but for any word that starts with 'trans', yes for sure....
i'm guilty of it - i'm in the electronics industry and a transformer is a 'tranny' :)

OOPS ! gotta go - there's a huge robot-like thing at my door who's upset about me calling his gender identity into question ! ;)

So you dont have the "transit van" in Oz? I'd have thought otherwise, but there ya go!

The Transit van was originally a model made by Ford - the sort of vehicle the Scooby Doo team travel about in. Since then its been applied to any make or model of that sort in the UK- usually they come in white and are driven erratically and angrily by balding men in dirty clothes known as "white van man".

So both Lady Ellen and Gwynvyd are telling us that all of those cases where members of the TS/TG community proudly call themselves trannies are hateful and negative?

I think both of you are making that up, while at the same time, remaining silent in the face of Popeye's repeated hate-mongering calls for TS/TG people to go to 'their own' forums instead of here.

I'd like to see proof that it is always a negative term, instead of a proud and defiant insider term of solidarity, the way the many links I supplied (and the many TS/TG people I've heard use it in person) portray it.

And incidentally if you look at the other current thread which Popeye replied to, you'll see what is perhaps an equally confusing statement of my thoughts following on from his post. I also note that I have picked Popeye up many times on the subject of trans-people of all sorts - he's entitled to his views, but I'm entitled to educate him too, and some of it is sticking I believe.

All of the chit-chat later about how it is OK if people want to call themselves that is negated by the first part.

Prove it is a horrible negative word.
I've already pointed out that it would be an insulting word if used with the intent to insult, but the current position that the word itself, like the 'n' word, is always horrible, is in direct contradiction to the many examples I cited, and I call BS.

And the double whammy of Gwynvyd's bigoted classification of guys who like TS/TG people and the right to use the word based on gender is beyond BS.

Finally, that you have always condoned Popeye's basic attitude, which is that TS/TG people should go elsewhere because this is a BDSM site, is borne out by the latest exchange where you don't say a word other than to comment on his choice of terminology while telling them to leave.
