If your tranny is slipping, it is a horrible negative word.

OK I'll rephrase it if need be "I think it is a horrible word" - better for you?

Honestly, I know the boards are quiet, but do you really have nothing better to worry about than what one "tranny" thinks of the word "tranny"?

And I havent ever condoned Popeye's attitude - I've reminded him often enough that there are websites for USCG retirees too and this site isnt designed for such people, so if trans people dont belong here then neither does he.

Why not take personal responsibilty and not passing it off for someone else to fix?

Try reading my sig line.
If I choose to spend my time worrying about and working against intolerance, hatemongering, bigotry, and disinformation spread in the service of the above, why should that bother you so much?

Oh good grief........

so now I'm intolerant of myself, hate me and spread disinformation about me so as to feed my own bigotry?

There are two schools of thought on combating such attitudes - one is to confront it and make a total nuisance and confirm everything the bigots think about you, the other is to confront it and educate so that the bigots might change their ideas, even a little at a time. The first ends in battle lines and laws needing to be passed which are disregarded by the bigots anyway - the seconds leads to a situation where we're not seen as monsters because those who were bigots realise we're just people.

And that is where I will choose to leave it. I have lived it and have to live it every day - I dont need to justify my thoughts and ideas to anyone who hasnt, however noble and upright they might think their thoughts and ideas might be.

Ain't it grand having such self-awareness now? Actually I've always felt it was a negative word as well.

And the hundreds if not thousands of people on those links proudly referring to themselves as trannies, while discussing all aspects of actual life...what are they, chopped liver?  Or do they not count, because they aren't being TS/TG to suit you?

If you don't want to be seen as a bigot, how about not taking their side, and trumpeting about other people who think differently than you  using 'horrible' words.

What is your problem??Every time I have heard the word it was used in a negative way, therefore TO ME it has a negative flavor.Taking who's side? Honestly you make no sense. I have no side in this, just a reaction to a word. Not a reaction to people, a reaction to a word.

fast reply--

i know multiple trans guys who use the term with no problem, the same way that i have several lesbian friends that use the word dyke for themselves. it's like any other term, some people like it, others don't. f you don't like it, don't use it.

i think, and emphasize THINK the problem is that there are plenty of trans individuals who use the word in a positive light the way that others use queer. and the argument is over a word that is intimately connected to a group of individuals and a lot of people can't tell the difference. so when you comment about the label people think you are somehow making a comment about the group the label is attached to.

Block is your friend.  You are of course entitled to your opinion and you don't have to "prove it" for people that attempt to incite argument with every single post they make.  I agree and it's obviously absurd to believe that you are a bigot or hatemongering by having an opinion that you are uncomfortable with that word.  It's also ridiculous to believe that any class of people should all agree on their personal emotions on any class of word and in fact suggesting it is a bigotry all of it's own.

~FR~

Words liike tranny, homo, fag, queer, dyke, lesbo etc are by their nature used in a derogatory manner towards specific members of society. There are and always will be a segement of the GLBT community who will take these terms and use them as a label of self empowerment and in a positive way. Even if I personally find these labels disgusting, I still have to allow the ones who do take these labels upon themselves in a positive manner as they see fit, as it is their right to do so.

hear hear, bear...
The word cunt when used to refer to a person rather than genitalia is offensive to many people... personally, I've chosen to take it as complimentary.  If my partner uses it, it's a term of endearment.  If someone uses it in a way meant to be hurtful, well, I choose to view it as meaning the person has recognized me as being a strong woman and is unable to make me cater to their insecurities - so they use the word as a weapon.

Did that make sense? lol

Yes you do make sense Greedy. It's the same with many women have turned the word bitch into a positive label to mean they are a strong minded and no nonsense person. The same way many gay youth have taken the label queer to mean they are proud to be gay. I could go on but I believe the point is made.
