Owner59 -> Gunman kills 5 on Illinois Campus (2/14/2008 8:10:23 PM)

Someone posted a rant today about some silly man-bites-dog news stories.

Kinda pales in comparison to the horror students seem to be facing on campus.

I want to tell the whiners to move to where there`s no stupid people, like Mars.

It is head in the sand cheerleaders for the status quo who facilitate  these things happening in increasing numbers, not the people who speak out against stupidity.

I think the death toll will certainly be rising, 17 total were shot.
I have just started watching the coverage, so very odd and sad.

If only people this troubled would seek and GET help before they snap.

The gunman did not even attend the school.
Such a sad story, they are calling it the Valentine's Day Massacre.

This is like the third one this week.

Yeah, it's really fucked up.  I just don't understand what drives a person to do something like this.  Honestly, it's not like we can increase prison sentences or penalties for people like this.  They don't intend to live for a trial.  We have mental health professionals everywhere, and there are free services avaliable.  I have seen them, and they do advertise.  But these kinds of people already feel persecuted, so they don't really turn to services for help.  Since we don't have mind readers in great supply, we never know what's going on in these guy's head.  We can sream for gun control laws, but you often find out that people like this broke dozens of laws obtaining their weapons.  If they weren't using guns, they would be burning down buildings and killing dozens of people that way.  I just don't know what we are supposed to do about people like this.

Seriously not trying to flame, but could you go into more detail on this,

"It is head in the sand cheerleaders for the status quo who facilitate  these things happening in increasing numbers, not the people who speak out against stupidity. "

My condolences to the families and friends. These are horrifying events.

I thought the correct form for one's initial posting on a tragedy thread was a verbal gesture of compassion THEN a rambling tirade about how your pet scapegoats are to blame. Did I miss the memo?

meatcleaver -> RE: Gunman kills 5 on Illinois Campus (2/15/2008 1:35:44 AM)

Just hand out more guns. The reason for these type of killings is that there are not enough people with guns to defend themselves.

Owner59 -> RE: Gunman kills 5 on Illinois Campus (2/15/2008 6:12:32 AM)

The toll is now seven.

This douche had a shotgun, and who knows what else.

I might be in favor of water boarding this guy,for the next 25 years.

Ah, I guess this is directed at me.  Well this is a text based forum, so it's kind of hard to make a VERBAL gesture of compassion.  I don't have to respond to a tragedy the way you think I should.  There is no correct form for how you approach a tragedy such as this.  My post was not a rambling tirade.  It was a response to someone posting about how this seemed liked the 3rd in a week.  I too am dismayed as to why this seems to be a common occurrence in our society.  But you apparently decided to take your frustations out on me, because I didn't respond the way you thought I should.  Well get used to that.  A lot of people in the world don't think the way you do.

Guns certainly don't help prevent a person do something like this.

Jeffff -> RE: Gunman kills 5 on Illinois Campus (2/15/2008 7:13:12 AM)

Actualy, had there been an armed citizen in the classroom, perhaps it might have helped

kittinSol -> RE: Gunman kills 5 on Illinois Campus (2/15/2008 7:14:21 AM)

And a nuclear bomb, as a cherry on the cake.

Jeffff -> RE: Gunman kills 5 on Illinois Campus (2/15/2008 7:16:31 AM)

That could be an over reaction..:)

kittinSol -> RE: Gunman kills 5 on Illinois Campus (2/15/2008 7:17:45 AM)

I don't see why: if gun escalation is the solution, we might as well go all the way.

Jeffff -> RE: Gunman kills 5 on Illinois Campus (2/15/2008 7:28:38 AM)

As a general rule, my politics lean to the left. When I see something like this, it angers me. In a perfect world there would be no guns. There would also be no hunger. no despotic governments etc. This guy shot and killed people and then himself. How do you stop it? Take ALL the guns away? that will realistically not happen. If the powers that be can not protect me , allow me to protect my self.

How would you prevent this from happening?

Jeff

You answered your own question :-) . At this point, I think the solution is to come down strong on gun ownership and to slowly make it a special privilege, not a right by law.

I cannot comprehend that people don't see the correlation between gun ownership and gun rampage. It's easier to buy a gun than a bottle of wine: and the results are there for all of us to see. It's quite obvious that it's people with guns that kill people - the figures speak for themselves.

Of course, if people choose to continue with this folly, they have to be prepared to put up with the consequences, such as the lastest massacre which made the subject of this thread. And well, people want to continue owning guns: they have made their choice.

The coffin industry continues to profit, so it's not all bad, I suppose.
