I heard today about a small but helpful step that is being taken in at least a couple hard-hit CA counties.  Property tax assessments from the peak of the boom will be re-examined to reflect the drop in prices/values.  For homeowners with property tax impound accounts, that could make a noticeable difference in monthly payments, and chop the twice a year bill for the rest.

Another big plus is it will suck money out of county governments and effect services.

Win-win.

It will have more effect on projected revenues than real ones, O59.  They will still be collecting more than they were previously.  CA has some interesting provisions on property taxes.  I think this is a very rational decision, and it just might make the difference for some people on the edge.

I'm all for chopping the fuck out of the welfare office anyway.

Rich:
I notice that you always want to chop the fuck out of the welfare office.  I am just curious as to why you are not nearly as vociferous in your condemnation of welfare for the rich?
One would think that rich people with their nose in the public trough would outrage you more than those less fortunate.  How would you feel if your welfare check were to disappear.  You just bought a house and you get to write off your mortgage interest...this is a form of welfare.  Could you continue to afford your new home if this gift from the taxpayers were to cease?  I have always wondered why it is that many who claim to be conservatives would have such a hard on for public assistance.  When the poverty stricken are reduced to eating sand the logical conclusion is that they will steal to feed their families...if they get caught then they go to jail and we wind up paying $30,000 plus a year to incarcerate them and their families are still on welfare.  It would make more sense to keep them out of jail and increase the welfare payments to carry them till they get back on their feet.  BUT NOOOOOOOO...all I hear is the constant whining those who are on a more subtle form of welfare decrying the excesses of the nanny state.  Jeeeeezzzz dude give it a rest.

We all have our pet peeves, Thompson.  Mine isn't so much that we have a safety net in this country (I like that, in fact) but with the entitlement mentality of those who turn the net into a hammock, and the fraud.

Such a conflict... Either you hire them into pointless make-work positions. ( Transportation Security Administration, anyone? ) or you just give them welfare...

Rich:
Those with the "entitlement mentality" seem to be the Ted Turners,Ken Lays,Archer Daniel Midland and Exxons of this country.  They take the safety net and make it into a 50 room mansion.  For every penny that comes out of your pocket for a poor person on welfare ten bux comes out for the rich.  Yet you continue to carp about the poor who exist from meal to meal....you are a pretty astute guy.  You are capable of good research but in this arena you seem to have a blind spot...why come?
