international decision your government takes has a great impact on the global economy...how could we not feel the need to give our opinions? ;)

You, or Iran, have nothing to fear from our election one way or another. You are protected by the United Nations[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m16.gif[/image]

As was Iraq, and we see what that was worth, Butch.

Perhaps, I do a bit of both now.  However, after a few nuclear hits, I don't know if the US would be producing much that was edible, so you might envy that strudel somewhat.

But I don't pretend to know a lot about why the French are happy with / or pissed off about (depending on what you read) their new leader.

Some are pissed at him, because he's boffing a model.

quote:

PARIS — French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Tuesday his relationship with model-turned-singer Carla Bruni is "serious," and he suggested that wedding plans are in the works.
Some analysts also say that Sarkozy's flaunting of his private life is a turnoff for many voters, especially more traditional ones.

Do people really consider the ability - or inclination - to "get ghetto" is a serious question to level at any elected official?

It's a metaphor, Licks, and I seem to recall inviting others to select their own if they didn't like it.  I don't see any difference between what I used and a suggestion that Bill Clinton was capable of "getting trailer park."

Given Obama's lack of experience, I think questions about his ability to both effectively negotiate and whether he has what it will take when negotiations fail are critical.

kdsub -> RE: Can Barak "get ghetto?" (2/18/2008 8:34:59 AM)

Wonderful rebuttal arguments LadyEllen I especially like this one….

We can get along quite nicely by ourselves thanks - we've long experience of getting embroiled in foreign wars where we lose lots of dead and injured for no significant benefit - so we hardly need you to help out on that count.

This is exactly why I want our country to be isolationists...just because your country as been foolish does not mean mine must continue to be also.

Your financial contributions after WWII were just a drop in the bucket compared to the United States…Same with men and equipment

We have talked about repaying war debt before… 60 damn years of you paying when you felt like it… and still owe billions from WWI…stop getting into wars you can’t afford and expect us to grow money on trees to bail you out.

You act as if we owe you that money for services rendered… you did not save us from Germany…we saved you.

OH this is rich as well….such language shame shame

For fuck's sake, this bankrupted the Empire - you do know about that yes? 1/5 of the world...... Britain a world power...... oh never mind. Anyway - suffice to say most of the world map used to be a light red colour, but the expense of paying to rebuild Europe and rebuild ourselves was just to much to keep the old place going.

World power…yes you were once the world’s power…when you weren’t getting your ass kicked by your former colonies. But besides that your noble ancestors would be ashamed of you and what you have let their sacrifices come to.

This is the best of all……..

You know, I really wouldnt mind it so much, if you were making your points based on the facts

You cannot show me one fact that I have miss-represented…calling me names and using bad language is beneath you I think and will not change history.

LadyEllen -> RE: Can Barak "get ghetto?" (2/18/2008 8:45:32 AM)

Go and be isolationist then - "mommy, the other kids are being nasty to me, they wont play the game to my rules and let me win, so I've brought my ball home. And I didnt do anything to deserve it, honest.........."

Its your sort of attitude that is the reason why half the world has a negative attitude towards your country; ignorant, arrogant and indignant at any idea that the US may not actually be all its cracked up to be. I thank goodness that you are in a minority on CM

Hi Ron

I very much want the United Nations to work. I think it is still the hope of the future but at this time it is worse than useless.

It can’t act in a timely manner and when it does it is lacking conviction and effectiveness.

It is crippled with political intrigue and its convoluted rules and regulations make it impossible to serve its purpose.

Even with all of this I think it is important and I hope the new administration be it Obama...Clinton… or McCain reverses Bush’s actions and tries to make the UN a tool for world peace.

I’m sorry our discussion seems to have deteriorated to you lashing out in frustration. This often happens when debating from a weak position.

I would not be so sure at least some of my views are in the minority. But even if they were... the majority does not always mean right.

Butch

PS…. If half the world has a negative attitude towards my country then that must mean the other half has a favorable attitude towards us…If you are going to make silly unfounded platitudes at least make the exaggeration leaning in your favor.

I recognise both that it was a metaphor and that Obama's limited experience bears some scrutiny.  What I don't recognise is what the colour of his skin has to do with either.

You might connect Clinton and a trailer park metaphorically but you definitely wouldn't with SonofaBush - because he was a rich kid. They're both white, but came up different ways. It wouldn't fit.

So why is it any more fitting to connect Obama with the ghetto? Did he grow up in one?  Now, if for you black=ghetto, I care little about it but it strikes me that the whole point of his candidacy underlines that America can be more than that sad and out-dated stereotype.

Believe me, I'm not offended by it, it just illustrates to an onlooker how little things have changed there.  It's interesting because there does persist, in US presidential politics particularly, an appeal to a "folk" background. They have to be cowboys or mint julep guzzlers, Boston brahmins and the like, when off-duty.  It's just illuminating that your mind seems to have alighted on the ghetto as being Obama's natural habitat and that (for you, for now) there isn't another arena in which his mettle can be measured.

I think the thing which makes his election highly unlikely is this very tendency and have read that his vote among white males is not all he'd hoped.

Shame. As Gil Scott Heron said "Would we take Jesse Jackson? Hell, we'd take Michael Jackson".

I'm sorry that you seem to think that a discussion can be had by providing huge insult to the maimed and dead we have from Iraq and Afghanistan by ignoring that we are the ones who stood by you and continue to do so through thick and thin, against better advice and in one of those cases against our better consience, and by putting us in the same league as certain other countries in your estimation who have not been such good friends, but perhaps wiser.

I'm sorry that you think I'm lashing out - clearly your idea of what comprises lashing out is greatly less than my own. Equally, you seem to be under the misapprehension that I'm frustrated because you see me in a weaker position - and I'm sorry for that too. But above all I'm more sorry for you, because you seem to have no knowledge of the crass insult you made and if you have such knowledge then you lack the good grace and consience to withdraw it and apologise.

TheHeretic -> RE: Can Barak "get ghetto?" (2/18/2008 9:35:32 AM)

Yep.  Almost like I'm trying to help condition the Obama supporters to not take the bait.  Politics is a dirty game, and he has set the bar for himself very high.

kdsub -> RE: Can Barak "get ghetto?" (2/18/2008 9:43:07 AM)

You sure need to be sorry a lot it seems LadyEllen... at least you keep apologizing in your posts. I think we are going overboard in our argument so I will not comment further.

But please read all of my posts in this thread. You would see my comments about your soldiers in Afghanistan.

If you are going to debate then at least read all the replies so you don’t look like a fool.

Don’t be surprised and indignant if when you attack someone they defend themselves.

No I don't...please point it out to me.... believe me I am never too proud to apologize if wrong.
