The thing about chick-lit is that it is so very well done. I read "Portrait of an Author as an Old Man" by James Heller. It was his last book, his swan song. I loved it. In it he said something like, there is no point on writing anymore, anyway, because women writers do it the best.

I am reading a cute book by an English author. I love English authors, I love the English wit and their humour is hysterical. I like the way they talk and use different words than they do here in North America. It is called, "Notting Hell" by Rachel Johnson. So far I love how she writes. It is so interesting to learn about Notting Hill, which I had known nothing. It is about very rich folks, another thing I dont know much about. There is quite a bit of gardening stuff in it, in which I am also interested.

Next up is a book called Rasputin's Daughter by, Robert Alexander. I have a thing for Rasputin, the Czar and Czarina, that time period and what was going on there I find very fascinating. I am unsure what sort of novel this will be but I am looking forward to cracking it open and finding out.

Chick lit can be done well, but I have a peeve that it's overdone now, and the more prolific authors are writing in a more formulatic style, which bores me to tears. I love coming across new chick lit with a fresh POV. I'll have to check out Rachel Johnson. I also love English authors, scenery, etc. Irish authors too - Maeve Binchy is my all-time fave.

I just finished "Snow Crash", the definitive Sci-fi/cyberpunk novel by the amazing Neal Stephenson. I'm not usually a Sci-fi fan, but i love this book.

Picked up "Mirror Mirror" by Gregory Maquire, the guy that wrote "Wicked". It's an interesting take on a classic Fairy Tale.

I also just finished George RR Martin's "A Feast of Crows" which is book four of one of the most amazing fantasy series I've ever read (and that's a really really lot).

I love books too. The way you learn something from every one, even if it's just to put it in the "do not read again" pile.

If you liked Snow Crash, go for Cryptonomicon, his absolute BEST. Though the Big Fat Trilogy is amazing too....

I loved the GRRM series, but was Extremely Annoyed at how they published the most recent one. Now in order to find out what happens to the characters we have to wait for the book AFTER the next one. Maddening!

I had an Amazon binge and ordered Carol Queen's Leather Daddy and the Femme. Love her!

Oh god, GRRM wrote about that in his journal, about why he did what he did and seperated the characters like that and it makes sense, as a writer, and for the flow of the book, but as a fan of the stories it just frustrated the hell out of me! Gah!

I have to pick up Cryptonomicon soon, but heard that Snow Crash was a good "intro" to Cyberpunk.

Have you read Tad Williams' Otherland series? Great mix of Cyberpunk and Fantasy, but soo long.

Well I am a fantasy nut, so most of my list are of those:

Rereading all my books by Mercedes Lackey, (and for a few days went to the bookstore to read her newest,Reserved For the Cat, I didn't like it much.) Um, read Charles deLints, Widdershins, (excellent book!) Impatiently waiting for Tamora Pierce's next novel, (can't find out when or what is coming out next, grrr!) Started The Red Tent, it is good so far, but had to put it down for a while. Been thinking for a while of reading classics, such as Ivanhoe, The Last of the Mohicans, Where the Red Fern Grows, (read all in middle school, but don't remember alot of it.)

I don't remember who it was, but someone mentioned Druid books, one of my faves is The Druid Renaisance, a collection of essays by different ppl. Also an excellent witchcraft book is Evolutionary Witchcraft by T.Thorn Coyle.
Hmm. I liked the Alex Delaware novels up until Alex and Robin broke up. then just got tedious.
J.A.Jance books are a good read. So is Stuart Woods.
For those who like novels with history and adventure, try Kathrine Neville, (think similiar to Dan Brown.)

They were some pretty amazing books. I love Tad Williams. I'm debating picking up his latest series, (which my husband assures me i've read the first one, but for the life of me i can't remember it.)

Laurell K Hamilton is another author I enjoy. Heinlein is always classic. Re-read Catcher in the Rye not too long ago, as well as 1984 and Animal Farm. *sighs* I need MORE BOOKS!! (of course, tonight, after reading the tap tap thread, I havent needed a book at work..LOL)

School-wise, I am reading/have recently finished The Origins of the Family, Private Property, and the State (Engels); The Sexual Contract (Carole Pateman); The Citizen and the Alien (Linda Bosniak); Masculine Domination (Pierre Bourdieu - and no, it's not what you think, even a little); Undoing Gender/Gender Trouble/Bodies that Matter (Judith Butler).......and more that I'm too exhausted to remember.
(I have a qualifying exam in feminist theory coming up in June, which explains most of this list!)

Fun-wise, I just finished Miracle of the Rose by Genet, which is beautiful, and made me wish I were a gay man in jail. Very erotic and moving and tragic.
I'm currently reading Lady Chatterley's Lover, which was a V-day gift from my partner - quality literary smut!

Hell if you like snow crash just go read the baroque cycle
Stephenson is a genius, he needs an editor but man that guy is amazing.
And the song of ice and fire series is the best thing going in fantasy right now.

Ohh, I just wiki'd the Baroque Cycle and it sounds nifty. Is it almost Steampunk-ish?
The second best series in fantasy is Robin Hobb's Farseer/Liveship Trader/Tawny Man books. I tend to re-read those ones every year.

I have been wanting to read the books written by Gregory Maguire. I hear they are really good.

If you don't take it too seriously and if you don't get offended too easily another book that was quite funny that I just finished is Lamb - The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal written by Christopher Moore. I hesitate to recommend it at times because many people get offended by it. It is truly funny though.

I haven't ran into too many people who know who Laurell K Hamilton is. I love her series and since you know who she is, would you be able to suggest another author that may write along the same lines? I know of Anne Rice but she isn't very high on my list. I live in such a small town and nearly fell over when I saw that they actually sold the latest Laurell book at WalMart. I normally have to order her books.

Actually, I've heard about that book. It does sound interesting, I love Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, so i can imagine that this would be pretty good too.

Its not steampunk, its indescribable.
Lets just say the theme is the creation of the modern world.
Its everything, It got called "The definitive historical-sci-fi-epic-pirate-comedy-punk-love story. No easy feat, that"

Now thats a review.
If that doesn't want to make you ead it, nothing will. I will warn you, its vintage stephenson, which means it has more side truns, back alleys and tangents of anything this side of Thomas Pynchon.
Its amazing, brilliant, long winded, excessive, and it has a great ending.
which if you read neal you know isn't usually his strong suit.

Laurell Hamiliton is awesome...I have finished her series..I think...Im not sure...I think I lack one in the farie series...

At the moment I am reading Princess Spider...which is about a Pro Domme...and VERY good...

I am also reading the story of O...but it is sooo not holding My attention at all.

I have a stack of nilla books waiting as well as D/s related books that My girl brought Me from her collection to read....the Anne Rice series is waiting patiently to be read for the 100th time...

And of course Tsun Tsu's art of War.

Yum.

That does sound really cool. Damn, I have an amazon gift card that is itching to be spent and now you are making me rethink my shopping list. I've been battling over which books to get for the last 3 days now and thought i had it perfect, now i'm wondering if i should pick the first of this up instead. Choices! Choices!
