Do anyone know why so many Goths also practive BDSM, to such an extent that some pepole belive that BDSM is a part of Goth?

I do not think that Bdsm is associated with Goths, at least not in the UK - culturally (sp?) elsewhere I couldnt say.
It could be that most Goths are more open about what and who they are and tend to be more relaxed as people (despite the doom and gloom myth) Because they are open, they are more able to experiment without keeping the issues closed. Now I am generalising, but I have never met a Goth I have taken a dislike to. Of course, with todays current trends, most people sporting heavy makeup and alternative dress are labelled' goth' - plus there is a growing gothic fashion statement, at least in the UK - I cannot speak for anywhere else. It has alot to do with the whole PVC/bondage/cyberchic thing that looks similar, as well as current gothic revival.

Peace and Love

I would assume some vanilla's would think the two are intertwined.
Myself, goth is a fashion trend.

It can be that you are right that there are two things that make pepole contect the two dark angel. One is that many goths like to dress in similar clothing to BDSM wear, not all but some do, the other is that goth to is an alternative lifestyle.

krys -> RE: Goth and BDSM (9/15/2005 4:07:05 PM)

Well most goths are inherently a little off the vanilla scale to start with. But far fewer goths are actually into BDSM than you might think. Cuffs and collars and PVC are favorite fashion statements, and whips make adoreable accessories, but the actual practice of BDSM is far less common than it appears from the outside. So you might say there are a LOT of goths into BDSM wear and some into actual BDSM.

i know that, i was just wondering why other pepole tend to ceontect the two.

Why do people wearing PVC, cuffs and a collar and carrying a whip make people think "BDSM"? The same reason that someone in a black shirt with a white collar makes people think "Priest" or someone in blue with a gun makes people think "Police" or a safety helmet and toolbelt make people think "Construction Worker". Certain articles of clothing and certain accessories are associated in the public conscious with certain activities. And short of Halloween and the Village People, walking around wearing those symbols will lead people to believe you have some association with what they symbolize.

EmeraldSlave2 -> RE: Goth and BDSM (9/15/2005 7:04:31 PM)

Most goths aren't INTO bdsm, but the cultural trappings/darkness/intensity do overlap.

The goths think of bdsm as being sick and twisted just like vanillas, AND that real kinksters are arrogant asswipes who have to make themselves feel important.

BDSMers think goths are just kids playing around and going to get themselves into real trouble and don't know what they heck they are doing.

LOL

As an active participant in both Phoenix's goth/industrial and BDSM scenes, I sort of find this thread amusing.

All this speculating and generalizing. "Most goths" this and "goths think" that. Sheesh.

From my experience spending lots of time with people who associate as goth, I think the ratio of kinky to vanilla is about the same in the goth scene as any other scene, but goths are more open about supposedly taboo things than your average joe. So that may make it seem more prominent within the "scene".

The same goes for any subculture, though.

nella -> RE: Goth and BDSM (9/15/2005 8:08:34 PM)

That is my experience to, goths and other pepole from subcultures is often more tolerant and acepting of others.

Actually I wasn't speculating. But, as a whole, goths are sheep.

Baa.

It could be worse. I'd rather be lumped in with the BDSMers than the "I'm a vampire" people.

Goths are no more sheep than punks, preps, jocks, skaters, hip-hoppers, hipsters, scenesters, kinksters, BDSMers, Goreans and any other group of people who come together for the love of music, kink, sports or any other unifying activity.

Goths are as varied as any group. You have your goth snobs, your Dungeons and Dragons goths, your kinky goths, your vampire goths, your goth wannabes, your 80's old school goths, your raver goths, your Hot Topic goths. And with the exception of the goth snobs, the goth community (at least in AZ) is one of the most open and accepting of people with all types of interests and ideaologies.

So maybe that's why we see so much open kink in the scene.

But I guess this all goes back to labels. On any given day, I can be labeled goth, punk, rivethead, preppy, corporate casual...but I am who I am.

nella -> RE: Goth and BDSM (9/15/2005 8:45:19 PM)

i agree, no subculture or group is better than others, and gots to have their share of pepole that justgo whit the flow, and in reality it is nothing wrong whit that if that is what the peron wants.

Yes, and perky goths and fashion goths and philosophy goths... And in my experience slightly more sheep like than many.

And ummm... Abstract... you do know I AM goth, right? :) (Old school corporate in case you were wondering.)

well sheeps you will find everywere.

lovingmaster45 -> RE: Goth and BDSM (9/16/2005 11:42:06 AM)

My sub is goth. She is on the staff at www.purgatory-theshow.com
It is a great goth/bdsm happening.
Most of the people there are very young. She is 21, I am 60; but I am accepted and I like to be around people who have different fetishes; whether they are bdsm fetishes or other types. I simply find them to be more interesting...I hate boring. I find most "formal" bdsm groups beyond boring. It is like turning the Indy 500 over to driver's Ed instructors.

nella -> RE: Goth and BDSM (9/16/2005 11:46:50 AM)

hey age is no problem, if pepole care for one another, love one an other, want to have a D/s relationship whit one another or whatever they might want to do whit one another, i see no problem that one is older than the other.
