Oh, for those still wondering if Pakistan is worth leaving on the map, they had an election yesterday and the fundamentalist Muslim League party was a "distant third" with only 38 seats of 268. According to the CBC radio news the defeat was especially resounding in the areas bordering Afghanistan, where al Qaede has forces concentrated. The majority of seats went to the secular opposition parties, with 154 seats. Of course the US backed dictator, General Musharraf, will not be stepping down despite the double embarrassment of losing an election and of having a western ally blowing up houses without permission. http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2008/02/20/india-pakistan.html India hopes to make serious headway resolving issues which have kept the two countries at war since Partition in 1947, when their English overlords, in gratitude for decades of wealth extraction from the region, had their bureaucrats arbitrarily divided the country into Hindu and Muslim states, thus fomenting sixty years of unnecessary bloodshed. Three cheers for colonialism, ancient and modern! Z.
