I heard an advert of their`s today and it struck me as kinda fucked up,on many levels.

There might be some up sides but this seems exploitive .

What do you think?

It's not uncommon in Japan now.  People pay to spend an hour with pets on lunch or break as a way to relax and enjoy their time in between the hecticness of everything else.

I think it's great- you get all the fun and time you want, with no real responsibility.  Isn't that what extra money is supposed to be used for?

um....Why?  I see free dogs and cats in the local classifieds every day.  Rent them?  Don't people have neighbors anymore?  I understand not being able to take care of a dog, but I have lots of friends and family that have them.  I love my mom's dogs (a scottie and a westie).  I bring them over left overs from my meals everytime I visit.  I can't take care of a dog, that's why I have my old cat.  People are just strange now a days.

Provided all the animals are being well cared for, I don't really see a problem. It's much better than having people buy an animal, get bored and then neglect them. It's a little odd, but *shrug* I'd rather have people rent them than adopt and figure out they don't want a full-time pet.

I had thougth about trying to start a bussiness doing that here, but decided it wouldn't work profitably.  I could see tourists wanting to rent a dog to go for a walk on the Coastal Trail, they would always stop and pet mine and want to talk about thier pets at home.   Also considered renting Skijor trained dogs, but decided too much could go wrong, and the potential for animal abuse/injury too high.

If you want a dog for an hour, go volunteer at your local animal shelter.

There are dozens or hundreds of dogs and cats who want some attention.  Adn if they get some walks, they are calmer and better behaved when a prospective adopter comes to look at them, increasing thier chances of geting out alive.

With all the dogs in this area some teenagers could make a fortune if they started a dog walking service.

From my point of view, animals are more magical and have so much more to offer than we often give them credit for. There has been tests done that animals help folks develop the Limbic system in the brain. This is really good, any improvement in the Limbic system is good for everyone.

The animals would need to have a secure and loving home base in order for me to feel aligned with this business. I wonder what the living conditions are for the animals, that is my most pressing concern. If the motivation is genuinely to help folks get some quality animal time when their lives are not able to support a full-time animal, then I think the animals would be more than happy to help out. If they are poorly housed and not properly cared for on all the levels animals need care, and it is more of a business thing, then I hate the idea.

I think it's a great idea. There are lots of folks who love animals but can't have one because of apartment restrictions, allergies of a family member, perhaps some sort of disability that would prevent them from providing full-time care etc.

edited to add: I just read their website and they are extrodinarily expensive! I guess it doesn't matter how much you love dogs .. if you want to rent one, your last name better be Trump!

Aside whats been said here already this is a great way to try before you buy. People not 100% sure if they want a pet can just rent one for a week and see if they enjoy having one around. Also like its been said here this is a great alternative of someone getting a pet, then realize they don't want it and neglecting it.

It isn't a new concept.   I've know about this service for years.    It is used mostly by those that love animals but can't have them in their home for whatever reason.

I wish they had a location near me. In my case I dont care to clean up dog hair. So this would be a happy medium, except if the rates are like renting a couch.

when you own a dogit is very hard to travel  and many have loved ones out of state

As long as the animals aren`t neglected or just used and stored until next use,it seems pretty positive.

To me it would seem that with so many animals and "renters",there is going to be abuses.

Maybe not this company, but certainly others won`t be so benevolent or worried about the animal.

I like Lucky`s comment about going to the pound to get some dog-time in.They could use visitors and would love to get a long walk mid-day.Most pounds will let you do this.

A great alternative for those that cannot have pets, and wish to spend time with them.........volunteer at your local shelter!!!!

I walk down to the one here, during lunch, sometimes just to give the kitties a little love. Lord knows I cannot take anymore animals home with me but I can spend some time with them during my work day when my babies are 60 miles away.

PAHunk, $75 for an adopted pet is an amazingly good deal. When you factor in the time the shelter has put in training the animal, yes we do that, and the medical care they have provided, including updating shots and spaying and neutering. There is NO WAY you can get a "free" animal that will cost you less. I've adopted 5 dogs and taken in countless other animals. Trust me, the adopted were less expensive at the outset. Also, there are many very well trained animals at the shelters. I know, I work with them!

Please, if you are even close to considering a pet, talk to the people at the local shelters. They will help find the perfect pet for you and your lifestyle. The shelters I work with are usually quite picky about the homes they place animals in. I have two dogs that I got because they were unadoptable to traditional placements. Not that people didn't want them but that the shelter employees would not let them. Spend some time visiting and talking to the people that know the animals there. They can help find a good match for you.

I adopted a GORGEOUS cat from the SPCA in October - a miracle feline. The people at the shelter were seriously into their work. I'd recommend it. I paid $100 for him - mostly medical expenses, I think (he is neutered, poor thing).

Pictures are available  .

PA, if 75$ is too much for you to spend on a dog, you can't afford one.

Don't get one.

They cost hundreds per year, best case.
