Okay, I have no desire to provoke a talmudic-like discussion of the differences between a sub vs. slave, but I've seen a great many people lately refer to their "pet". The vast majority don't seem to be talking about puppy or pony play.

If you have (own? harbor? feed? train?) one,  or you sometimes yourself scratch at the door of someone who does, what characteristics of a person or relationship make one a pet?

Points for the reference to the Talmud but anyway...

For us, the reasons we call me pet (specifically kitten) is that I'm honestly very happy to chase laser pointers, bat things around and am prone to bouts of silliness, like taking a bag of candy and running away from him going "Treats! They're treats!". I've also discovered that I can enter subspace from a long period of kitten-play.

Of course, we really see me as a combination of submissive, slave, and pet. We usually simply refer to me as either his Kitten or his girl - which, for us, encompasses all that I am to him: His bride-to-be, lover, friend, future mother to his children, slave, kitten, gaming partner, submissive... everything.

Hope this was helpful. I'll show this thread to Valyraen and see if he has anything else to add.

For Sir pet is simply a term of enderment, its slightly patronising (which he loves) but also sweet. But this is just how he uses it, i know others mean it in a differant way

This is for AquaticSub: Genesis 1:26 states that man may dominate all other creatures  but the dominion intended is a caring and responsible paternalism rather than a callous exploitation. In the Talmud (Sanhedrin 59b) "dominion" is interpreted as the privilege of using animals for labour.

Probably the same kind of reasoning that drives a wife to call her husband "Pookey-Bear" in a vanilla relationship

I'm not sure why...but Master called me pet very early in our relationship. He had told me it was His special term for me.... Apparently He meant to say for "s" types He has had. I remember it losing some of its "specialness" because its a term He had used for every "s" type He had had. We are not in to any kind of "pet" play so I'm not sure why He uses the term.

He has called me his pet from the beginning. We are much more D/s than S/m, given more to the balance than pain.I love to be held, I like quiet and stability. He gives me all of that and much more.

It also states that the universe was fully formed in seven days.  It took more like 5,475,000,000,000 days.  Could be that Genesis is wrong about some things.

More romantic and protective than sub or slave, less so than D/lg. I'd much prefer to be a pet, loved and cherished, than to spend my time doing laundry and following him around Home Depot or lumberyards.

Because "pet" as a affectionate diminuative is far better than "snookums" for play.

Wow.... I love the word cuntlet. It sounds so damn cute in my mind. I feel the need to get some of those Cadbury mini-eggs and chirp "cuntlet" at my friends...

i kinda like the nickname "pet", it's cute and affectionate but at the same time has a certain connotation in our world.

I use the word to denote an attitude.

A submissive is someone who submits.
A slave is someone who surrenders.
A pet is... well... a human pet.

It will have an impact on how I treat someone, but as AquaticSub comments, there will be some overlap. A human pet, to me, does not imply acting like a different species, but as a domesticated human animal, which is more likely to mean curling up at my feet than to be chained to my bed. And I certainly don't find it appealing to have one use a litterbox; hell, you can train a cat to use the regular toilet, and most people already know how to do just that- why seek to undo that?

Health,
al-Aswad.

Excellent. Takes the bite out of "cunt," to be sure. I love it.

Health,

Firmhand refers to me as "pet", but it has nothing to do with pony, puppy, or kitty play of any kind.  As others have said, it is mostly an affectionate diminutive, though it does have more of a connection to my status.   I find it a lovely reminder that I belong to him.
