Depends on your own personal taste and safety.....Soy candles are soft, and easily manageable.
Wenchie had the right idea about how to use the wax, and the aftercare she uses seems to be what works best for me as well...If you know what your doing, no reason not to use what you have available to heighten any and all sensations associated with the wax.....I do tend to enjoy using a knife sitting in a bowl of ice as well, to heighten all areas coated in wax.

I have always used paraffin wax, the spa's are about 25-65 and the wax is 2lbs for like 12.99 ( target.com)

As for dripping candles heres a link to a fella that makes them, they are 100% paraffin and melt at 100-110 degrees, a nice temp for dripping, he also colors and scents candles on special order..

Good Luck and enjoy *grins*

how about a butter knife that's been in the freezer?  I've never tried it, but it could work...

My former sub and I tried wax play once. Just used a short Rokeach (sp?) candle. I dripped the wax on her clit and labia after trying it on her thighs from different heights. When it hardened, I pulled it off oh -so slowly with my teeth.

I'd forgotten about it until this thread. May have to try that again sometime....

My very favorite is plain beeswax, and also an ice cube, the contrasat between the wax and the ice makes both of them that much more fun.  Of course there has to be a blindfold as well for that to work properly, so that yuou don't know which is going to come next.    Also a very good idea for the person who is being waxed and iced to be tied down, because if they jerk and kick the candle out of the hand, someone could get burned.

If it is parafin cold water, and then fingernails, of the person who's nipples or tender parts the wax is on.  Beeswax can be removed by gentle rubbing with fingertips.

The Dom-fiance and I tried hot wax for the first time the other night, and it was WONDERFUL!  I kinda wish He didn't START on my nipples, but hey, whatever He wants, right?  It was just shocking, but I loved it and He seemed to, as well.

However, the candle we bought... didn't last long OR burn well.  Does anyone have any tips on what kinds of candle to use?  I know colored and scented ones burn hotter.  Do "bare" candles or jar candles tend to work better?  Obviously, we're both intelligent people and are well-versed in all the safety tips, but we lack to experience to know what is the EASIEST or the most fun.

Candles aregreat, they do burnb fast if you tip them...but what works just as well...and is reusable...is the parafin wax baths that you can get...I think conair makes them...for around 50$ you get the bath, with wax, and then you could get a second wax block to keep on hand..it gets hot...and does the same thing, only no flame to worry about keeping steady...and the wax can be placed back in the bath, considering of course that you are clean and all of that when you play....

Its a lovely accent to have to any dungeon...because you can get massive amounts of wax with out waiting 100 years for the candle to puddle wax for you.

Beeswax has a much higher melting point than plain Parrafin....and so it is easier to get burned....and therefore not generally recommended for wax play.

This is true.  You have to hold it up higher.  On the other hand it is easier to get off afterwards and also has, in my opinion,  a more pleasant feeling on the skin.  The higher melting point is not really a problem unless you are expecting it to behave in the same way as a parrafin candle.

This is the kindest most helpfull answer I've seen you give yet. The details are excellent and thnx much for the links.

This is my general wax play design, easily modifiable if you want to
include multiple people.

Supplies: wax, long tip lighter, sheet or tarp, baby oil, knife,
baby powder, blindfold, (if using a crock pot, ladle, spatula,
paintbrush, any other spreading toys that look interesting)

Get the wax: Either two blocks of paraffin and two glassed church
candles melted together in a crock pot, or just the church candles
for easier transporting. I haven't noticed much temperature
derivation using these types of candles, but white wax is harder to
see where it falls and green tends to just look black on a person.
Start prep at least 2 hours before the scene by lighting the candles
or starting the wax to melt. If the candles are cold, it will take
longer and the wax won't melt as evenly

Prep the area: Flat surface is necessary, a bondage or massage
table usually works fine and is padded. Outside is nice because you
don't have to worry about getting wax on anything. If you are on
the floor, put a flannel sheet or comforter down first to keep
things from being too cold. Cover with an old sheet or tarp, and if
you're off the floor, cover the area nearby as well. Wax will get
everywhere! Lay out all supplies beforehand, you don't want to have
to leave burning candles or naked person alone too long. Also, make
sure your area is well-heated. Even though the wax will get them
warm and give them a nice shell, when it comes off they will feel
the cooler air.

Prep the people: Don't wear your good fetish gear! Again, wax will
get everywhere. For the waxer, wear throw away clothes and/or an
apron. For the waxee, get them naked and blindfolded. I like to
have their focus totally on the wax sensations and you don't have to
worry about wax splattering into eyes. Lay them down on the
surface, starting stomach down usually works best.

Start the scene: Start to connect with the bottom by massaging
their skin, letting them relax into position and get used to your
touch. Massage the baby oil onto their skin. Not only does this
feel yummy, but prevents wax from painfully sticking to hair and
makes it much easier to peel or scrape off. Once you're fully into
the scene, you can get into the wax.

Waxing: I start generally about 18 inches above the persons skin.
Get a good full layer all over their body. Be careful about
dripping on the sides as the skin is more sensitive. Once you've
established an initial layer, you can have more fun with sensations,
bringing the wax lower or higher to build heat (the higher the wax,
the more the splatter). You can paint the wax on, let it drip
slowly or just wash it over them with a ladle. The feet are also
lots of fun. On the stomach, be careful of the belly button.
Sometimes it's good just to put a plug of wax in there or cover it
with a cotton ball.

Removing wax: Wax is likely to still be slightly soft and pliable.
If you're peeling the wax, getting as much in one motion is a very
awesome feeling for the sub. Slowly start at the edges and pull up,
gathering the wax as you go. If you scrape, just press down gently
and pull towards the wax and down. There's always a few drips and
splatters to scrape off. If you've used oil, it should come off
fairly easily. Don't try to get off every piece of wax- a good
shower will do the best job at that.

After the wax: Once you've removed the wax, I sprinkle babypowder
all over the skin. The skin is very sensitive at this point and the
cool softness of the powder feels like rose petals just falling
down. You can rub the powder in and smooth over the skin. This
will help dry off some of the oil as well.

If you want to reuse your sheet, put it in the freezer to freeze the
wax, take it outside and get as much as you can off by shaking or
pulling it. Then toss in the washer and drier to remove the rest.

tip for keeping surfaces clean like massge tables and furniture: thermo blankets at walmart. cost two bucks, and are disposable.
