of course its schools...have you not seen the game show "are you smarter than a 5th grader" and see all these adults not even get past like the 3rd question.  they have even had actual teachers on this show as contestants and fail.

when i was in usa the schools near where i was living got out at like 2:15-2:30!
that is a whole hour before i got out when i was in school (back in the 80s).

Raechard -> RE: What with all the profiles claiming to be "a dominate"? (2/23/2008 9:30:53 AM)

I don't watch that because it's depressing thinking how a 5th grader may know more than me, it's like masochistic television. It’s also depressing thinking how much we have forgotten since school.

kitttty -> RE: What with all the profiles claiming to be "a dominate"? (2/23/2008 9:59:05 AM)

I have seen so many of these profiles that I was wondering if it was some accepted kind of slang.

"We are a dominate couple" or "I am a dominate woman"- a few months ago one came to the forum wondering why she couldn't find a female submissive. Well, when your profile reads "we are a dominate" whatever, you revolt a lot of people.

If people do this on accident, I am almost baffled by how the error does not jump out at them.

Thank you LaTigresse, that's a HUGE compliment. I'm flattered.

There are people who insist the term "dominate" is a noun. Amusingly, I got chewed out by one the other day - he magically knew I wasn't rweally submissive.

Edited to add: I think it's less the schools and more people who insist that the term is dominate and will chastise if you use the term dominant. A few people start doing it, start scolding those who don't and it slowly spreads via chat rooms and webpages.

Am I the only person who is marveling at the grammatical errors present in the majority of the posts by those espousing superiority over those who use the term "dominate" as a noun?

... NO, it IS that schools are now that bad and American schools are recognized globally for being poor.
...

Not, unfortunately, just America. UK standards have dropped steadily over the last 20 years or so too, with no sign of improvement or recovery. It's not that the youngsters are useless - nor even that the teachers are useless. Much of it stems from the current teachers having been poorly educated themselves. If you were never taught about the subjunctive (not a pervy thing to do with CM btw) how can you pass on your knowledge to others; you simply pass on your ignorance.

It'll take at least a generation to get back to a well-educated society. Hopefully half of them will be dominates and half subjunctives.

And newscasts are now "dumbed down" for the masses, possibly so they don't sound "pretentious."

How many times have I heard, "None of the passengers were injured," when the correct grammar is, "None of the passengers was injured." Or, "The body was laying in the street." I futilely yell, "It wasn't laying! It was lying!" But do they listen? No.

There's an increasing amount of profiles that show a basic lack of understanding of what one might do and what one is.

Here we have a sentence introducing a post about failures of self-understanding. Unfortunately it begins in the passive voice. The passive voice, as you will recall, is a device which every high school composition teacher strives to guide students away from.

This paragraph also mistakes a lack of basic understanding for a "basic lack of understanding."  What is a basic lack of understaning? Is it something which aspires to one day be an advanced lack of understanding?

Multiple choice question:

Which of the two sorts of lack of understanding does this compositional error represent?

Of course we can generously overlook these.failures given that this post shows no signs of being, say, a diatribe against poor English.

Could it be a slightly more educated Nigerian scammer, with sets of better stolen pics, who is behind this head-shaking increase of those saying they are "a dominate"?

Hmmm. The focus of the post has curiously shifted from a comment on lack of self-understanding to a complaint about English usage, or about cranial wobbliness in a certain subset of the population. The Amish-esque grammar here leaves this interesting question unsettled.

Short answer question:

Do you find this complaint amusing in this context?
.

Tsk tsk.  Or, are our schools really getting this bad?

I suppose this is a fair question.

Anyways, rock on.
wit ur bad self.

How many times in this thread has the adjective "submissive" been used as a noun? Why are we not tearing hair and gnashing teeth about that error?

Partly, I think, because in English rules follow usage. We appreciate this when we are not lodged uncomfortably up on our high horses.

As it happens, and the nounification of "submissive" has been going on for two or three days longer than the nounification of dominate. Submissive, used as a noun, is no longer a clear cut case of an error.

Given the prevalence of the "error" it is even now being reclassified as acceptable usage by lexicographers as well as by those posting to this thread. I wonder how long it will take for this to happen to the noun "dominate".

I think the noun "dominate" is ugly. I don't see that it arises from anything particularly good or worthwhile. I would like to see less and less of it.

I think the noun "dominate" has a good deal in common with this thread.

While it is true that languages change and there is no objective right and wrong on these matters, using 'dominate' as an adjective does not follow English grammatical patterns, which makes its usage questionable.

It is fine to noun verbs and verb nouns, but if you don't do it in harmony with established language patterns, then it would seem indicative of a poor grasp of English.

Ex, Shakespeare made assassin into assassinate. adding 'ate' can be a sensible way of making something a verb. I could take dominate and make it dominator and it would be understood and it wouldn't look like it was an incorrect part of speech.

Somehow using the adjectives submissive and dominant as nouns is less jarring than using verbs like dominate and submit as nouns or adjectives.

In any case, I get the impression that those who do it are not doing it on purpose and using it as some alternative expression. It looks like they are doing it because they do not notice the error. At least that is my impression from reading profiles of those who use the term.

Because it's not an error.

Just like many words ending in '-ive' (coming from French) such as superlative, operative and missive it can be either an adjective or a noun.

This is what throws many learners of English, as English has a regular grammatical structure and base but an irregular vocabulary.

Unlike say an Eastern European language such as Russian, Polish or Bulgarian where you can look at a word and immediately know whether it is a noun, adjective or verb in English - because it is a hybrid of both the Germanic and Romance language structures - you can't.

I write as a qualified TEFL teacher with over 9,000 hours of teaching experience, and find that most non-native users of English as a second language at Cambridge Advanced or TOEFL level are able to use English more competently than quite a few native speakers of the language.

I see it on the boards all the time. One such mistake or area of confusion lies with the words 'effect' and 'affect' and I wonder if for some these words are interchangeable.

Then you get new words arising from bad usage, for example 'prolly' and 'innit', the latter which appears to be a ubiquitous word in Britain.

EvilGenie -> RE: What with all the profiles claiming to be "a dominate"? (2/23/2008 1:15:07 PM)

Nope one is not ''lying'' in the street. One of the basics taught in the English language is that any form of the word lie always refers to an untruth. Hence, the person would be telling lies in the street if lying in the street. The proper terminology *is* laying in the street. If one is lying, one is telling a lie in any form of the word such as, ''I am going to lie down.''  If one is prone or supine or about to be then the word used is always a form of lay. The words lay and lie are mutually exclusive terms.

Sorry, I could not help myself. This is one of my pet peeves. As to what others have said I think that we all can be lazy at times with our writing especially on a message board. I, however, am one of those people who find things like dominate in place of Dominant highly irksome. In fact, I just had to correct myself three times as I couldn't type dominate used as a noun. I kept typing dominant.
