Termyn8or -> Vampires (bunked or debunked) (2/26/2008 12:53:18 PM)

Had to start the Dark Shadows thread dintcha. I have had this theory for many years. I do not tout it as being true, just possible.

First of all let's get rid of all the mythology and other BS about it. Forget about anything supernatural, this being able to turn into a bat, or a wisp of smoke.

One poster said that Barnabas had them spell bound. Another mentioned they had him chained in his coffin for a while. How could they do that if he could just turn himself into a wisp of smoke ?

Turning into a bat is also out the window. What happens to all that mass ?

I have no belief in magic of any kind. I believe that when something is described as magic usually there are firm scientific principles behind it. But peoples' tendency toward mythology has created a whole bunch of folklore.

But did they create it out of thin air ?

Consider this ; there are more species' on this planet than we are aware of, they fully admit that. There are some that they have a hard time figuring out how they survive. And then there are others. Insects that have incredibly high strength to weight ratios, in fact that is common, compared to humans. Then we have the story of the little old Lady lifting a car off her grandson, something like that.

I believe that we are all something like eight to ten times stronger than we think we are. What stops us from using it is sometimes pain, but I think it is more in the mind. Adrenalin can do quite a bit.

So, we know that there is DNA and RNA. The change in one molecule can have a very profound effect on your body.

That in mind, what if some agent comes along and changes you ?

To outline, your digestive tract is compromised and you can no longer absorb nutrition from normal food, you must ingest actual blood, that would contain the nutrients. Forget about the holes in the fangs. Ingest, by whatever means necessary.

Your eyes become very sensitive to sunlight, perhaps even your skin. Perhaps you can't tan, and folklore developed that a vamp would burn up in direct sunlight. But it would go a long way in impelling one to be nocturnal I would think.

But you get to use 100% of your strength at will, not just in a fight or flight situation. With that superior strength to weight ratio you can move very fast. Thus some folklore about being able to disappear in a wiff of smoke. With this level of strength you can easily jump out a window on the second or higher floor without injury. Thus the myth that a vamp can fly.

And if injured, heals at an incredible rate. Thus the stake through the heart necessary to keep them "dead".

I kniow this is whacked out, but some mythology has roots in fact. Perhaps there really was a Count Dracula a long time ago. Perhaps he was born that way. And then the story got embellished so much that it literally became fiction. Such things do happen over the years.

So taking away the unbelivable, and leaving the (just barely) believable, there is a possibility. A person can live on blood. I think if one drank the blood of a very healthy person, they would probably do quite well.

Yes, this is whacked out, but I just ain't in the mood for politics right now.

Tear into it.

T

PS, if you think I am nuts and decide to say so, I will not be offended a bit.

Rule -> RE: Vampires (bunked or debunked) (2/26/2008 1:06:55 PM)

You are way off, T. Vampires do exist. They are not remotely human. They can disguise as human, though. They are one of at least a handful of extraterrestrial species. And indeed there is another batlike species of extraterrestrial, but there is no evidence that those batties drink blood.

joanus -> RE: Vampires (bunked or debunked) (2/26/2008 1:31:32 PM)

Vampires DO NOT exist, couple of reason.

1 with the mass exploration and popularization of "Vamp" they are very much rockstars in their own right, if they where real at least one would leave the shadows to seek the lime light. Exp: Queen of the damned.

2 Blood drinking. First blood's function is to carry oxygen to the body, not only that there are no nutritional benefits to drinking blood unless you have certain rare ailments. Today’s Vampire covens forbid blood drinking and have even changed their book of rules (the Veil) to outlaw it.

3 Vampires like werewolves are just stories told long ago to profit off peoples fears. Valid spread the rumors of being a Vampire to scare his enemies. Silversmiths made up Werewolves stories to make money of the locals. One company even made a profit off selling Vampire killing kits to people passing through Transylvania.

No matter how much we wish they were real they are not. As the saying goes you can wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which one gets filled first.

Lastly Modern day people who pretend to be Vampires are simply people who hate their ordinary boring loser lives thus they pretend to be something that represents what they wish they were. Posers and Pansies, they delude themselves into believing their fantasies and in some cases cause people harm. We should all remember that there is a fine line between fact and fiction. I simply look at them and am glad I don't have to go to such insane lengths to be noticed or fit in.

now if you will excuse me I’m off to take a nap, 48 hours without sleep is not good for your body.

You are reaching farther afield than is necessary.

Porphyria is a family of genetic disorders whose pathogenesis would account for much of the characteristics of vampirism.

Porphyria

Vampires as described in folklore and in Bram Stoker's "Dracula" very likely do not exist. Humans with the traits and urges ascribed to vampires most emphatically do exist.

And yet Celtic's avatar looks strangely, freshly gorged with the red tint of a new feast.  And the eyes!  Those taunting, "try it and I'll bite your neck" eyes...!

One of my friends observed a werewolf up close in the winter of about 1976. He estimated it had a mass of 250 to 300 kilogrammes. I believe him.

He saw it very much up close, at a distance of a couple of metres.

Move to an area where there are no USA citizens that require two seats in an airplane and you will see them less often.

I visit Romania a lott for work. IF you would tell all of this to the people there..they would laugh at you.
They still have burial rituals to prevent the dead to become vampires.
(yes I don't believe in them too, but it is weird to see so many still do))

Gwynvyd -> RE: Vampires (bunked or debunked) (2/26/2008 2:39:20 PM)

Celtic is correct.. there are those who have the condition Porphyria there are also Sanguinarian's and Psi's ( also known as Psi-Vamps ) out there. Some times the goth role players get mixed into these groups and it is hard to tell the real ones from the role players.. ( you think the Goreans are a cliquish lot.. ha!) and then you get hybrids who use both Sang and Psi in which to "feed" or get sustance. We are not even going to get into "other kin" here.
As I often quote... " There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio, Then are dreamt of in your philospphy" People are very quick to dismiss things they know very little about or do not wish to know about.

Sanguinarians for the most part ( I am not the approved spokesperson mind you) feel that there is a life force and energy in the blood its self. There fore when they consume it, ( In the Society it is only acceptiable to consume from a willing Donor. Donors are usualy a Partner, or someone you have a commitment to of some sort...) they are partaking of that life force, and power with that person. Many in the society are against actualy biting.. and many safety measures are taught on how to carefuly take blood from a donor. Donors are generaly very well taken care of, looked after and protected. All in all it is very akin to D/s in many ways. Psi's have thier own little niche... They believe that every one has energy that can be obtained either through touch, or through drawing it out with out touch. Some prefer different types of energy. Sexual, saddness, anger, fear, happiness... Some will search out donors who exhibit these things.. or some will go about to cause these things in those near them so they can feed. ( that is where it can be ickie) Some believe in having consenting donors.. some feed off of crowds.. some off of individuals who have no idea. Some Psi's do not realize thier feeding patterns untill someone points it out to them. ( some do not even realize they are a Psi ) We have all met those people who just suck the energy out of a room... or brighten up a room simply by walking into it. That is a good sign they are prob. a Psi. It is decently frequent you will get a rogue Psi in a group or area that needs to learn about consentual donorship. *smiles* Generaly the groups police thier own.

There have been long debates on the benifits or downfalls of being a Sang. or Psi. As well as that of a Donor. As for turning into a bat, flying.. turning into mist or smoke.. I would have to say I have not seen any of that manifest personaly with any one I have come across.

I hope this explains and helps a bit.

Gwyn

So if bunk is nonsense, why is debunking the act removing the nonsense? Wouldn't that make sense of the bunk?

Could it be the action of verbal vampires sucking the meaning out of words until they become twisted shells of their former selves?

Stake holders want to know...

Many Native American tribes have elders and those who know the stories of those who change thier shapes and walk as totems. Some claim they have seen it.

Others say they must have been chewing on buttons... or hitting the pipe a bit too hard.. but then.. who is to say.

Rushemery -> RE: Vampires (bunked or debunked) (2/26/2008 2:45:44 PM)

there is a family in Mexico that looks like werewolves, hair covering their entire body, face, I dont remember what they called the condition but thats probably where the stories came from, people who have that condition probably stayed in the woods away from others who wouldnt understand them

Zensee -> RE: Vampires (bunked or debunked) (2/26/2008 2:46:34 PM)

Sounds kind of like a pyramid scheme to me, ftg. If each vampire infects it's victims, eventually the world will be full of very hungry vampires and no nosh.
