William F. Buckley Jr. dies at 82

By HILLEL ITALIE, AP National Writer 27 minutes ago
William F. Buckley Jr., the erudite Ivy Leaguer and conservative herald who showered huge and scornful words on liberalism as he observed, abetted and cheered on the right's post-World War II rise from the fringes to the White House, died Wednesday. He was 82.

...............................

"Mr. Buckley," one non-fan wrote in 1967, "you are the mouthpiece of that evil rabble that depends on fraud, perjury, dirty tricks, anything at all that suits their purposes. I would trust a snake before I would trust you or anybody you support."
Responded Buckley: "What would you do if I supported the snake?"

He was one of my heros, which may surprise a few.

I wish the Firing Line Videos weren't so expensive.

I loved him.  His mastery of the English language was impressive.

Not bad for a non-native speaker, huh?

LOL

He said he thought that Bush's "legacy" would be "indecipherable."
I don't think so.

Coincidentally, our English teacher was called William F Buckley; an Irish guy also renowned for withering sarcasm and witty retorts. He'd have been about the same age. Sounds like the same sort of wanker, too!

I may have disagreed with virtually everything he believed but I always found his writings interesting and challenging.

ownedgirlie -> RE: William F. Buckly Jr. Dies at 82 (2/27/2008 11:18:03 AM)

That's what I loved about him DomKen.  Whether or not one agrees or disagrees with his theories, he was a class act all the way.

Years ago I'd read Buckley and Will because they had actually bothered to ground their beliefs intellectually. Then something happened to Will and his essays became mostly sappy nostalgia but Bill Buckley was always a sure bet. He served to show me where I had not adequately thought out my beliefs.

I remember him well from the early 60's but I dont remember him at all, if that makes sense, other than that he projected an extremely mannered and idiosyncratic attitude.
I was a slip of a boy then and I guess I listened to him and unconsciously filed this that or the other away for future reference.

He developed a new technique for piano playing.
I recall reading a bit of it and not finding it much use.

I watched this when you posted this last time, Level. 'Truth be told, your man Chomsky wipes the floor with him and the other bloke uses spoiling tactics such as interrupting him half way through a point.

He was fine until he let David Frum, dismissal all the Conservatives who didn't support the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq.

Makes me wonder if Frum tried to dismiss Buckley when Buckley turned around and stopped sucking tiny White House Cock.

MrRodgers -> RE: William F. Buckly Jr. Dies at 82 (2/28/2008 4:09:50 PM)

He did become a bit horrified by the bastardization of the conservative movement by these neocons. Trouble is...even he didn't know when many of the rest of the right did...Reagan was the beginning of that bastardization and one could argue and history may...was the first 'neocon.'

A few snipets:

The best thing he ever did was to have Dr. Mortimer Adler as a guest on Firing Line for TWO hours (shows). I would have loved to have had attended his classes.

He once wrote that his respect for mankind and his political intellectual adversaries was not only reinforced by his friendship with John K. Galbraith but also by this occurance:

Surely they generally knew each other and their respective political views but traveling on the same plane, his wife didn't have anything to wear with her formal gown. Buckley met Perry Como, who generously allowed that he would love to see Mrs. Buckley wear a huge diamond broach whose sparkle lit the room, that Como had just purchased for his wife.
After the affair..he mentioned the broach to Como. Como told them it looked far too good on Mrs. Buckley to think of taking it back. Buckley (worth maybe 10 times that of Como) was moved at such an incredible act of generosity.

Also: Buckley was actually proud of a letter he received in the 70's from George McGovern. "America has to be a great country when one could make good money writing such unmitigated bullshit."

Buckley was funny, with a coruscating wit and according to most...one of the most gracious people you would ever meet.
Yes, while I agreed with many but not all of his political views...we will surely miss him.

Firing Line was one of my favorite shows. I could have strangled Buckly at times, but he always made me think.

Agreed.  Coincidentally, I am currently reading what I believe was his most recent book "Cancel Your Own Goddamn Subscription."  I recommend it to anyone who's a fan...............luci
