That's what I loved about him DomKen.  Whether or not one agrees or disagrees with his theories, he was a class act all the way.

Agreed.  Coincidentally, I am currently reading what I believe was his most recent book "Cancel Your Own Goddamn Subscription."  I recommend it to anyone who's a fan...............luci

That's now on my list [;)]

An excerpt:

Mr Buckley, I would trust a snake before I would trust you or anybody you support.

Buckley: Dear Mr Ruesthe. What would you do if I supported the snake?

I disagreed with him on just about everything, but always had respect for his intelligence. I also admired that he showed his respect for the intelligence of those on the left as well as the right, while still allowing disagreement with their views. he was a class act, and Conservatism doesn't have many capable of stepping up to the plate now that he's gone.

That's sad to hear.  One of the original 'preppies'.  Amazing to think English was his second language.

Yes, yes, yes... he had a great vocabulary. Big whoop.

He was also a racist,
he felt poor people didn't have the right to vote,
his stance on gays was that they should be "eradicated,"
he felt that women should never have been given equal rights in our society,
and he felt that only the rich should have political power.

Um... and you guys are praising this sack-o'sh*t, why? Just because he could speak well, and he died?

Dont hold back, say what you feel.

DrPhilergy

p.s.  I appreciated his intelligence and the respect he showed people who debated him, but the use he put that intelligence to seemed to be to put his vocabulary and his rhetoric in the service of exclusionary and discriminatory ideals.  An intelligent and articulate bigot is still a bigot.

Not bad for a non-native speaker, huh?

LOL

Ron:
Both his mother and father were native speakers so I find it difficult to believe he was not a native speaker also....that he received no formal English training until he was 7 does not negate that he was exposed to English as his mother tongue from birth.
