I/we (when there's a 'we') have used many devices to decide which will be top/bottom. By using various events, often those niether of us have any control over the outcome. Many simple games can be used quickly to make the decision: Rock, Paper, Sissors; Toss of a coin and the like are basic. Anything in which the outcome is in doubt will work to make the initial assignment.

Being ones who love role play, fantasy and bondage, et al - not to mention suspense, we have built an entire scenario on a structured set of random drawings... I know, it sounds, reads, like a complete controdiction of terms (maybe it is).

The structured part is that we initially agree on what specific question will be decided by each consecutive draw then build a variable set for each draw.  For exmple: first draw might decides location; second draw determines activity; third draw sets duration; etc. Your combined imaginations are the primary limitation (ignoring all other considerations...)

In my/our interactions we include assignment of top and bottom every time because we both like both rolls; and, neither want to always have the same roll. The idea is variety; mix and match if you will; to include elements such as suspense, apprehension and thrill into our interactions; and, including randomization of the participant personalities and order of engagement into the mix when engaging in multiple partner contact.

Overt public multiple partner role play brings some very interesting social reactions to the percieved interactions; and various degrees of risk become possible too. Very thrilling.
