Bitch here - 3/2/2008 12:38:52 PM

This may be another one of my failed ideas in the end, but at least I'll know one more thing that won't work.

I notice alot of bickering, quoting (as if to shove someone's own words down their throat) and bitching about unsupported statements purported as fact.

Now Mod 11 is going to be stepping in and hijacks and derailments will be reduced to say the least. She pulled one of my posts FROM A THREAD I STARTED !

So, what I propose is that when you think what someone says is wrong, stupid, invalid or off base in some way, instead of polluting the thread with incessant quotes inside of quotes, telling people they need a shrink and all that, we put it all here.

Oh, of course I am sure if people do this that someone will put my words here. If they're polite they might say something like "What were you smoking that day ?", something like that, but I am not big on politness. I have a thick skin and I know that at times I have been a bit drunk, so my foot is probably in my mouth as well, and I am sure someone around here is going to see to it that I am apprised of that fact. I don't mind.

But as the database, err thread grows we can be in a thread and just say "Please refer to page 143 of the Bitch here thread". See how nice it could work ? These days you can see a thread with 40 pages amd most of it is quoting. Goddammit, I might not remember everything I wrote in my whole life but that was fucking YESTERDAY. Come on.

But see in this thread you have good reason to quote. Calling anyuone on the carpet for proof or justification for their statements anywhere on the forum. I did not say fora because I think each section should have their own "Bitch here". But it is no more badly needed anywhere than Off Topic.

It's a simple process, do your quote, but post it here, also include the URL of the thread if you can (I have yet to figure that out but I will). Then your argument. You can be as insulting as CM allows (this is still CM). Provide links to evidence or whatever you want. Just stay out of those OPs' hair ! Dammit sometimes I start something, get back and there are three more pages. Even without quoting, without bickering, it gets to be alot to read.

This is killing threads. And I might as well say this now. At CM sometimes the rules work against me. Certain things, OK well I understand that I am welcome not to frequent here if I do not like the policies. But there is a rule I would like to see imposed, and as I know Mod 11 is watching me. Hey, I know me and I don't blame her a bit.

What I would like to see is a limit on how much can be quoted. Like a ten line limit. I do believe this would help. I know this would go against a few people's grain, but they do not realize what they are doing to these threads.

They are taking a very good subject, and polluting it to the point where it is intolerable. People quote entire articles. Once in a while someone will quote one of my longer articles and say nothing. Or does it just seem that way because they simply interspesed their replies in the quote ? That of all things should not be possible. How the hell is it a quote if they can edit it ? then the next person reading it doesn't sometimes know what is the response vs what is being responded to.

Now I am no dummy (if you disagree refer to page one of the Bitch here thread), and I know that changing how the software works is no easy task. But think of Mod 11, the hours and hours of shit she has to go through, because if she didn't, this would degenerate into a common blog.

This is a blog, it is just uncommon. I like to think that we are above the rabble that we may rouse. That is because I know something, something that seems not to cross everybody's mind all the time. This forum is public.

Took me some time to get that through my head. Anyone in the world can see all that we type, period. Do we want to bore them to death ?

I know you are watching Mod 11, I would love to hear from you about quote length limits and making quotes uneditable. This may dismay some but it would clean up the posts quite a bit. People would have to find the part to which they specifically refer in their reply, and then the reply is always outside the box.

If I am not mistaken this software is aspplayground, but I know nothing about it. The options to do this might be right there, I don't know. But all in all I think it may seemingly inconvenience some, but limitations on quoting would probably be a good thing. Your thoughts ?

Those who don't agree with me, well refer to page one of the thread "Bitch here". If you want to bitch about my bitching about bitching, refer to page one of the thread "Bitch here".

At first I was kind of screwing around, but trying to make a point, now I am not so sure. This might be the best idea since unsliced buns (the kind you can make a V cut in for a sausage sandwich). I was having a great Sunday, oh wait, I still am, am the only one in the house and I don't yet have my shoes on. But the thing is I am serious, bitch here.

So whaddyall think ? And when you get started and disagree with something someone else said, like it says, bitch here.(or do we need a seperate bitch here thread for this bitch here thread ?)

All be well, and remember, bitch here.

I agree! A limit on the number of lines being quoted is a great idea. I dislike weeding my way through page after page of quotes to figure out where the next response is located.

You can always just backquote like I did here when there's just a lot.

Or, hell, you can just say, "In response to post x:".  Whatever.

(This thread is about really long backquotes, right?  Because the OP's way too long to read.  :P)

I know at the 'b' site it's almost mandated that the first person to respond to a complicated post actually quote the whole thing because people often remove their whole post. I guess you can only do that here within an hour's time though, so, you 'may' have a point.
But what if someone said something totally stupid that was more than ten lines long?
I could spend the whole day at this particular thread quoting dumb things people have posted. (many of them my own) *g*
But it's much more fun answering back in the area they did it. (otherwise they might miss my erudite answer)

Yeah, quotes from other sources of information, whole excerpts lifted from other sites on the net, sometimes a screen long.

Forgive me if I am incorrect on this, but isn't lifting info off other sites a breach of the originators copyright, does one not have to gain permission first?

I was told about this on another site I frequent, that the admin on the site will direct an annoyed originator to the person who lifted the material, as it was fed up with apologising and risking law suits.

What was suggested was if someone wants to quote something, then supply the url, or as CL says, a  'here' button

Is that not the same here regarding copyrigt?

I always give credit where credit is due.
And enjoy calling out those who don't. (as far as stealing others' work.)

"Almost mandated"? No. Some quote whole quotes, some (like me) only quote the points I am responding to. Then there are the lazy fucks who don't know how to trim quotes (usually nested quotes). Every so often a few of us jump on their asses, and they're good for a while, but they eventually backslide. Invariably Rethugs, BTW.

We do insist that people use valid links (= not-blogs) and proof when arguing in Politics. That seems to be somewhat rare here; it seems the standard of proof is "I assert xyz, therefore, you must accept xyz as true." That kind of BS would get them laughed off the board there. Also, it is my perception that the moderation seems more consistant on b.com. We had some input into writing the guidelines for the forum, so we mostly know what the boundaries are. I think our insult abilities are more finely honed, subtler, and funnier. (look, it's not a political discussion without insults.)

Unfortunately, the recent changes there have caused many of the best posters (Progressives) to go to another kink board run out of Amsterdam. The level of discourse there is higher than at CM or b.com, IMO. I have a bit of familiarity with b.com; I have over 15K posts there, mostly in Politics.

I don't care for the site out of Amsterdam...it seems to me just a bunch of joking around and flirting, and not enough of actually talking about wiitwd.
I still have questions about it, and I still have answers.
I've been to G's site a few times, but...
I just don't really get it.

There are 'fair use' exceptions whch generally allow excerpts.

There are, but, if you've done a google search and come up with something, isn't it really only right to direct people to where the info comes from?
