ORIGINAL: SugarMyChurro Darcy: My problem with Reznor is simply this: I prefer the work of his heroes, to his own work. To be more precise, I really like the work of Bowie, Eno, Joy Division, Throbbing Gristle, Coil (post-TG members), and J.G. Thirlwell (a.k.a. Foetus). Hell, you can add Queen and Adam Ant to that list also. I just find Reznor's work very derivative after "Broken"/"Fixed." I can throw in the song "Closer" from "The Downward Spiral" as being an important work, but the rest of the album felt a bit like remixes of the one song to me. Beyond that, I prefer his collaborative efforts with Bowie and Eno on a bit of "Outside" (a magnificent, often overlooked work in which Reznor's influence is very apparent - also probably Bowie's last good work after a long career of being stunningly brilliant) and Saul Williams on "Niggy Tardust." If he weren't himself, I'd say Reznor would obviously really like to be Foetus. His musical stylings and imagery scream Foetus. Just sayin'... To be fair, I haven't listened to a full Nine Inch Nails album since the Downward Spiral. I always thought him to sound more like Skinny Puppy (sometimes to the point of being little but a plagiarist, in the case of "Down in It.") Maybe I'll like him more if he's moved towards Thirlwell's style, ha! I somehow doubt he would be able to concoct lyrics quite as clever/insightful/hilarious as Thirlwell's, however.
