I am curious.  How many women out there have felt discriminated against at your work place by men?

I lost a fucking good job because of a man; he wanted a mistress, I told him to fuck off. I lost my job.

I've been sexually harassed but not discriminated against.

2 of those apply to me (passed over and change of hours).  The passed over part is kinda my fault... I told my AGM that while I would like a management position, I won't take salary.  I actually make more money than my immediate supervisor (the snotty little bastard..only been there under 6 months to my 4.5 years, and tries to tell ME how to do the job...).
And they cut my hours...

Illustrative story, from the annals of transition

Prior to transition I was general manager of the company I worked for; hiring/firing, supervising and managing the place to healthy growth for three years. This success was hardly surprising, since I had all the qualifications, foreign languages and experience required.

After I started transition, the company brought in three guys to do my job - their thinking was that we were at the stage now (thanks to my efforts) where expansion was needed. Meanwhile I took a job in marketing, no longer customer/supplier facing whilst I transitioned. Apart from this move, the only thing that was agreed was that from now on they would treat me like any of the other women in the office.

And they did.

Now, I want everyone to concentrate hard, and try to think just who it might have been who was then taken to be the personal secretary of these three new guys and the CEO? Any ideas?

Next, try to guess who it might have been, in management meetings with four guys in the room and me as supposed marketing manager, that was told to take the minutes and make the coffees? Anyone getting the drift?

Oh yes, they treated me like a woman alright. Except their ideas of what a woman is and is for were firmly stuck in about 1982. I kicked up such a stink they eventually "encouraged" me to leave, especially for the terrible sin of me telling them they were doing it all exactly wrong; three of them couldnt do the job I had combined for three years - but then their only qualification was their gender.

Never mind. They were doing it all so exactly wrong they went bust within 18 months, and I started my own company competing with them, and we're still here.

E

LadyEllen, i am now experiencing it as a 48year old.  I don't know anything.  My opinion is asked for, given, ignored, it costs in time, money, morale, and then it's given to me to fix ... Recently, it happened again. I insisted that my advice be minuted, and when they ignored it, I insisted my forecast outcome of the decision made also be documented ... to hardly disguised smirks and laughter ... and the reports came out today, and yep it was as I foretold ... and I wont be the one to fix it!  and yep i'm the submissive!
Wish I could to the same with lotteries ...

I have experienced all kinds of discrimination. Mostly sexual harrassment.

You should have included an option for "not at all".

LaTigresse -> RE: How many women have ever felt discreminated against at work? (3/6/2008 3:38:36 AM)

Of course. I am sure all women have to some degree. I cannot pinpoint any of your checkpoints but it was definately there. Sadly enough, I found that the worst of it was by other women, not men. Women do not like other women, most especially if you don't fit their little ideal world. And no, it had nothing at all to do with sexuality. They hadn't a clue.

I dealt with it in a variety of ways depending upon which job we are talking about. Quietly proving them wrong at one. Using it to my advantage at another. Leaving them without a good employee that knew what she was doing at yet another.

Right now I work with three men full time and one part guy. It is probably the best work environment I've ever been in. Aside from the work itself, boring, it is the best job I've ever had. We all get along very well. Now the women that own/work in the other company that is in our building.......thank god I don't work with them........that's all I've got to say.

Some of my best work experiences have been with women. I worked for a husband and wife team roofing houses for a year, and she outworked most men that I've known, and did everything that everyone else did.

Both judges I've worked for have been women, and I was treated wonderfully by both, all in all.

Lashra -> RE: How many women have ever felt discreminated against at work? (3/6/2008 4:53:52 AM)

I was in a meeting once and yes I was the only woman, my supervisor asked me to get him a coffee. I said sure YOU just go down the hall, turn left and the coffee room is on the right hand side. There was a moment of silence and I sat there mentally refusing to budge, its not my job to make anyone's coffee but my own. He finally got up and got his own coffee, as did the other two men. That was one of the reasons I started my own company and now I don't have to deal with that bullshit.

I love the coffee one.  That is a true classic.  My pet peeve is them refering to us as girls and now letting us do the boys work when it consists of cleaning up their nasty bath room and break room.
I can throw stock and I am 48.
So, where do we go from there?  Just real aggrevated.
When you have a medical disability as many of you will have later in your life, it will be more obvious that you are discriminated against.  I work in a right to work state where it makes it impossible to proove anything.
When the company let me go where I was a dispatcher at four years ago, they said it was not my hearing that caused the errors, but my mind.
I had paper work where I have 70 percent hearing loss in both ears at that time.
I was mad, but I let it go because noone would back me on it.
They will get theres one day.  Just hold your head up ladies, and be prepared to make a phone call to the department manager and vice president.
Whine, Whine, Whine.
