xxblushesxx -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/6/2008 12:29:36 PM)

This is what allwords.com says about the word boi;

  1. (countable) (internet) alternate spelling of boy
  2. notably in BDSM-type roleplay (e.g. father-son), a male bottom (i.e. submissive partner), defined not by junior age, but by his obedient role, especially when that implies him being subject to spanking and/or other punishment by the dominant 'top'; enters especially in the compound houseboi, in the role of (house) boy doing the household and generally at his master's beck and call

BadOne!  Are you having a good day or a bad day?  I thought it was funnyyyyyyy.  I also think it's funny when a mother calls her own grown son a "son of a bitch" or a "bastard."  I'm always like, WTF? Does she KNOW what she's saying??

BoiJen I had this arguement with a young guy who wanted to set himself up as a gigalo for women.  Asking for advice and such I pointed out for him that 'boi' was generally a term recognised by the Gay and Lesbian communities to denote particular orientations etc within them.  He told me to get fucked, that words evolve and he was sticking with it.

I shouted him a can of Crisco.

BoiJen -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/6/2008 12:34:33 PM)

I just think when words are limiting that one would want to be clear about their own identity....the link I posted had supporting articles about the origin and use of the word. That's all

Re: increase in use of "boi" amongst straight males.

Blame pouty Canadian punk-pop princess Avril Lavigne. For those of you who have been living under a rock for the last few years, here you go:

And I fully agree with you BoiJen. Though I'd like to point out that typically with the bear community and most of the male leather community, they use the form of "boy" and leaving "boi" to the lesbian community.

Archer -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/6/2008 12:52:37 PM)

Being Daddy to boi Lane, it has been one of the trends I have noticed as well. Best I have come up with as far as the start of the trend actually goes back to Club Kids in the late 90's and the gender bending the males were doing.
I think judged on the reading and stuff I have done, the gender bending aspects of some straight males in that scene, some of them kinda coopted the term. After the initial set though the history of the term gets lost on the young club culture and they think it began when it hit their sub culture. Not unusual for a group to forget that someone else had something first and to be centric enough to believe they invented it.

BoiJen,  I think that a citation of it's use in Literature, Advertisements, etc might be of use and add to the wikipedia definition.

I don't understand. On the net all you have is words...so if you're really trying to get a point across...like making yourself appealing to someone...one would think that you would do anything you could to be clear. That would include looking up the meaning of a word to make sure you're using the right one right?

Sorry BoiJen but your word has been co-opted by the youth of today.  Teens are using commonly boi as an alternate spelling of boy, plain and simple.  I believe there is a connotation of kind, caring, and sweet male associated with boi (as opposed to boy).  I suspect they felt a need to use an alternate similar to gurl.  More often than not I've seen/heard young women using the term to describe males they like, rather than boys using it to describe themselves.

Elsewhere on wikipedia we find:
Boi or BOI may refer to:
  • An altered spelling of boy used for various purposes, including:
    • As a spelling that is deliberately altered for reasons of gender identification, sexuality, or group affinity; see Boi (gender)
    • In goth (and sometimes punk) subculture boi is used to refer to a young man not afraid to experiment with traditionally "feminine" things such as eyeliner, frills, etc. and as a protest against gender roles
    • As an alternative spelling, such as the rapper Big Boi and the song titled "Sk8er Boi" by Avril Lavigne

Youth of today huh? I guess I need to go turn in my card now...I'm old at 22

solvr70 -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/6/2008 1:21:34 PM)

wow. i did not know any of that.

but in my own particular situation, with my own particular interests, still now sure if the term would apply.

ah, labels!

Im having a great day.  I got "fan mail"

Missokyst -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/6/2008 2:13:43 PM)

On the other side I often assumed the use of the word "Gurl" was some indication that it was a male in female guise.  I couldn't find any other logical reason to spell girl that way unless it meant some other gender.
Any idea why people use that?

camille65 -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/6/2008 3:16:03 PM)

the word boi was originally used in the context of my original post. I personally think that it's use in "slang" is from the same use with straight guys who are lazy...

they are uncreative unimaginative in making up their handles...and instead of going wait...this might mean something they're so caught up in trying to get what they want they make an ass out of themsselves because they aren't educated about the meaning of a word.

That's my opinion of course.

And who says anyways that you have to be educated to use a word...people make asses out of themselves everyday now don't they?

As I go back to my original message...if you're on the net looking to make a positive and distinct impression...don't be lazy...the only thing it does is give someone a laugh at your expense

This is similiar to your argument concerning the word 'doormat'.. but in reverse. [:D]  http://www.collarchat.com/m_1292365/mpage_1/key_definition%252Cdoormat/tm.htm#1292440

MasterFireMaam -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/6/2008 3:28:42 PM)

"boi" morphed into describing het male subs who had an female side, such as a sissy, that they liked to bring out when playing. Now, it seems to be morphing into a description of those who like "force bi", too...which follows the whole "force me to be something" by saying they can't be "a real boy (read man)" if they're wanting to suck cock or take it up the butt. Fairly stupid, both in the homophobic way as well as not being able to admit who you are and have to be "forced" way.

RedMagic1 -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/6/2008 3:39:48 PM)

In that case, the only solution is for the OP to change her nick to "OldGuardBoiJen."

ThundersCry -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/6/2008 4:04:16 PM)

Unless someone is exposed to the ways of the lesbian/gay scene, so to say...they probably won`t know any different.

I guess I  learned in a humiliationg way at a play party...I asked a leather dyke what her girls name was...she explained in a few sentances.

Whoops....

Good post, BoyJen

LadyPact -> RE: Straight males and the word "boi" (3/6/2008 4:12:04 PM)

Ah, no.  It seems to Me that boijen is using the word within it's proper term.  Take this for what it's worth, but I'm a huge member of the boijen fanclub.  This person isn't always right, but certainly gets the credit  of convictions.  At least, the opinions come from what boijen believes to be true.  Yes, a bit of a SAM at times, but it doesn't seem with malice toward anyone.  I find boijen has a better intent than most.  This is just My opinion.

Now that I wrote all of that, I'm still not certain of the OP's preferred pronoun.  A little help, please.

Hard to keep up, ain't it? Damn kids git off my lawn! [:@]

i had seen "boi" used by males in the skatepunk scene in the early 90's, before i had any knowledge at all of the GLBT community. At the time, i assumed it was related to Oi! music.

In the context of sexuality i agree that boi is pretty much reserved for butch lesbians, FTMs and genderqueers. i largely fit the type of femme hetero male, but i don't think "we" really have a word (except for sissy, but that's kind of a subset, at least in the BDSM world...)

Complercated stuff. [&:]
