ORIGINAL: JerryFrankster I seriously doubt many "legitimate" research organizations are going to be willing to hook up an EEG to someone while their girlfriend pounds their ass with a 10" strapon. or even inflict serious non-sexual pain on someone for research purposes. I really think that if this is going to get done, it will have to be done by private individuals. There has been some serious clinical research on how people process pain. I wouldn't think it would be entirely impossible for an enterprising academic psychologist to get funding for an EEG study comparing pain responses in masochists and non-masochists, although the level of pain would probably have to be fairly mild - and of course, this wouldn't directly address the question of subspace. On the whole, I think a private individual could indeed do it better. The EEG could be seamlessly incorporated into some kind of medical scene, too.
