Mercnbeth -> Pope - "New 'sins'; more ways to go to hell!" (3/10/2008 7:43:02 AM)

Pope Ben, new CEO for Catholic business interests; decided to add some more sins to the litany:
quote:

Loosely, the seven social sins are:
1. Biothetic violations such as birth control
2. "Morally dubious" experiments such as stem cell research
3. Drug abuse
4. Polluting the environment
5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty

Curiously missing from the list - sex with alter boys.

However lets look closer at #6. Is this an admission of organizational 'sinning'? Are there no mirrors in the Vatican? Defining most of the artwork there as 'priceless' should be synonymous with 'worthless'.

I could go on for pages responding to this hypocrisy but I let others have some fun first.

...Okay I can't help myself - one more!

#4 - In this age do they still need to burn the ballots and create smoke, white or black, to announce a new Pope? Is burning a way to avoid any 'hanging chad' debate? Do they buy 'carbon offsets' from Al Gore? Can't they just come out on the balcony and say - "It's Ben!"

Betcha he keeps a flask, a doob and a condom under his big hat.
Just sayin.

edited because I can't seem to be able to spell condom correctly.

Wasn't the pope in the Hitler youth?

I can't remember what the original seven were so I doubt this will change my life in any drastic way. We need a new film called 14 now.[8|]

LadyEllen -> RE: Pope - "New 'sins'; more ways to go to hell!" (3/10/2008 8:02:56 AM)

Lets see

1) making thousands of priests celibate worldwide obviously doesnt count as birth control?
2) curiously, popes are not averse to taking advantage of equally "morally dubious" medical research of the last few centuries to keep them alive into ancient old age; the church having long ago described the human anatomy, all progress which violates this understanding must be held to be morally dubious in that it questions the source of moral authority, ie the church
3) hmmm. so drugs are bad, but alcohol as imbibed by the priesthood and laity worldwide, is fine? Not sure thats gonna fly far.
4) "go forth and have dominion over the Earth"; having dominion means we can do what the hell we like with it - God can always make a new Earth after all, if we muck this one up?
5) An organisation which sits on billions, possibly trillions of dollars of wealth and yet demands contributions from the poor who attend its churches, said what now?
6) er, said what?
7) sorry, I'm not getting this one; it said what?

New ways to go to hell?
Could I have a "handbasket" with that?
Does this mean that someone who died 20 years ago and did all those things gets a "pass?" (Neener, neener, neener!")

Hadn't thought about that I shall make a complaint and ask it to be enforced retrospectively.[8|]

What I want to know is what was wrong with the traditional ways of going to hell?  Was there a sudden outbreak of virtue that I missed?

Maybe the Catholic Church wants to compete with the Baptists and Evangelicals as far as "sins" go to "get to hell."
I had a crazy Baptist Minister who lived next door to me some years ago, well, until she was "let go" by the Baptist Church in town.
That was her answer to everything.
Play the stereo too loud? "You're going to HELL!"
Drinking beer? "You're going to HELL!"
Having a cookout and laughing and having fun? "You're going to HELL!"
What is it with those people? Everyone's going to "HELL!"
Of course (they're) never going to HELL for being pain in the ass neighbors, are they?
One time she was in the front yard preaching to no-one in particular and I told her, "take that shit downtown and go preach on the corner!"
Sure enough, the right arm goes up in the "Hitler salute" and,..."you're going to HELL!"
I'd had it with her and turned around and dropped trou and "nut-flapped" her.
Then I said, "no, YOU'RE going to HELL, the section where they have SEX all the time!" "COCKSUCKER!"
She was aghast.
Sheesh, there must be 10,000 ways to "go to hell" but maybe 3 ways to go to heaven.
It's called "manipulation through guilt induction."
Yeah, I guess another *human being* is going to decide who goes to hell.

kittinSol -> RE: Pope - "New 'sins'; more ways to go to hell!" (3/10/2008 8:35:53 AM)

What's amusing is that "believers" are so simplistic that they have to believe in hell in the first place.

Second edition: wasn't the pope in the Hitler youth [8|] ?

xBullx -> RE: Pope - "New 'sins'; more ways to go to hell!" (3/10/2008 8:36:46 AM)

I think I'm safe, I rather doubt that even satan wants me around......... I'd drive him absolutely batty.

LoL. The moment I saw the thread title I thought the SAME thing. Does anyone even really LISTEN to catholics anymore? I thought we all kinda regarded them like the lil brother who has to wear the helmet when he rides the short bus to school.

Yes, yes kitty, the Popes vacation retreat is the Eagles Nest.

All in all though I have been to that part of Bavaria and wow is it gorgeous.
