Alumbrado, You seem like a smart guy. You know any discussion of this sort will go no where as a cyber discussion.

There are lots of people here who read but don't post.  How about considering providing the examples you alluded to for their possible edification, instead of letting the appeals to emotion stand unrefuted?

Stephann -> RE: Religion and Religiosity (3/13/2008 8:37:03 PM)

The point is, Alumbrado, is that religion isn't grounded in logical necessity but rather emotional desire.  Machines don't need to worry about their sins.  Arguing that machines and humans are equally soulless will, naturally, result in a logical discussion that has no need for the concept of God.  It's not a belief I hold.  You needn't share it, to respect the fact that I do hold it.

General comment ...

I'm a Catholic. Part of Catholicism is confession ... so I have a confession to make.

I mostly participated in this, and one other discussion, just to get to the point where a specific group of non-believers made snide comments about those that practice religion, or called them silly, illogical, shallow ... pick your insult, for a relative stranger on the internet.

Maybe now, we can all have a good laugh next time these very same people, tell us that paranoid horse shit about Christians looking down on everyone who isn't a Christian.

You sure are flip-flopping. You said that your belief was based on your system of logic which was just as sound as CL's system of logic...now you claim it isn't logic at all but emotion, which you seemed to deny earlier....well, which is it?

Stephan,

Sorry it's not more obvious to my poor wits. A metaphor for what precisely?

Alumbrado...
1. because emotions win every time over reason.
2. because reason is foreign to this discussion (such as it is)
3. because confrontation is more important here than discussion

I only suggest, you can't attack the concept of god , you can only dismiss it. You can however attack religion.
It's not that I disagree with you regarding the concept of God. It just that neither side is able to make a point for its case. What is reasonable or makes common sense to many of us, is in itself not proof of anything. What is likely the case is not a proof. Believing or faith is not a proof.

In the face of that, I choose to treat believers and non-believers alike, as individuals with differences. It's the compassion, patience and understandng we offer others, not the dialectic that matters in this case. Don't you get it.
It's a Not belief in god that matters, it'd only how it's translated to religious dogma that counts.

We probably agree, though I have a quibble about using the word religion in the context of your remarks. Religion, from the Latin re-ligio, to "re-connect", seeks to (re-)connect the Particular (man) with that which by any name is Universal. It follows, therefore, that dogmas which set man against man, saved against condemned, chosen apart from not-chosen, teachings which divide the whole, cannot be legitimately claimed to have any religious relevance or purpose.
