Cool, but it`s against the rules to talk about it on the forums! :p

See, I make what I think's a smart reply to impress domiguy with my (genuine) agnoticism, and it comes back to bite me in the ass... I'll stick to knitting in the future [:(] .

SugarMyChurro -> RE: .feelinglove.feelinggod. (3/11/2008 3:44:55 PM)

I would not dispute that people obviously have spiritual experiences the truth value for which they cannot provide any evidence. But there are also many asserted versions of the divine that are more about indoctrination and controlling behavior than they are about helping people make a connection with any possible god. So on the one hand we have spiritual experience and on the other we have religious indoctrination - all of it pretty ambiguous and without any supporting evidence.

The problem is this: allowing those kinds of individualistic or group spiritual ideas shape the policies under which we all must live.

Some nutters would like to tell everyone else how to live just because they have a particular spiritual or religious viewpoint; and those are not the rules we agreed to live under.

Yes, but do you own a nun's outfit [8D]?

If you want to examine Catholic ecstastic religious experiences, start with Saint Teresa of Avila.  Her works were banned by the Church authorities because of their sexual nature.

And of course, there are always Tantric sex and The Kama Sutra, to be discussed.  [;)]

Wasn't it Teresa that made self-flagellation so popular amongst nuns?

hm....Not sure about that one, kittenSol.  Perhaps that factoid will be listed in the Online Catholic Encyclopedia?  (or not!)   [8D]

I still want to find out about the hair shirts and crawling on your knees until they bled...

They must be pretty desperate to want to mortify their own flesh like that. I guess CM didn't work out... I mean... can't they find someone to do it for them???

Vendaval -> RE: .feelinglove.feelinggod. (3/11/2008 4:18:28 PM)

I think that the vows of poverty and silence might get in the way of that!  [X(]

kittinSol -> RE: .feelinglove.feelinggod. (3/11/2008 4:24:13 PM)

Interestingly, I've read posts on these boards from people who seem to have chosen a lifestyle that's uncannily close to that of these poor nuns. There's no limit to human eccentricity.

Odd it is, only this night have I read about such things, hair shirts, particularly goat hair shirts to encourage severe itching. Now shirts are replaced by cilice, a most interesting device, try wikipedia on such an item.

Hey kitten - Your comment made me think of something else to.  'Sub space' could even be an equivilant to people 'touched by the spirit'.

Interesting, but seriously SUBversive. I wonder how extremely religious people would feel about this daring analogy [:D] .

Well if they followed Rumi they would be delighted.

*bright smile* He was a true romantic and lover at heart.

If you can get your hands on his works do. They are real eye openers.. and usualy the first step in learning I give to my students and or subs. He mixed romantic love with the love of God.
