I'd say not having religion affects my D/s about as much as not having a hat.  I'm not an atheist, I'm more agnostic.  Everyone can have their beliefs and religions, just don't try to rule me with them.  I still have a concept of something called morals, which in itself is a belief in something insubstantial and often illogical.

However I suspect that there's a lot of added fun bringing religious overtones into D/s and kink play.  As the.dark mentioned regarding confessional and holy places, there are a lot more taboos to break if you have religion which some may find entertaining.  Similar fun may exist for some people who incorporate hats into their D/s play, if that's their kinda thing.

Chloelicious -> RE: How does NOT having religion affect D/s? (3/12/2008 9:05:37 AM)

Well  I'm atheist but I don't tend to prove that god does'nt exist: If you believe in God, Allah, Mother nature, whatever that is great personnally I only believe in me and that is not easy everyday.

This said If I was dating/submitting to a "believer"/ "Christian" It would not change my relationship as long as He/she does'nt try  to "get me  religion's straight".

Aneirin -> RE: How does NOT having religion affect D/s? (3/12/2008 9:13:04 AM)

I try not to preach, it is generally not permitted, as what I have found, people may find for themselves if they seek it.

DesFIP -> RE: How does NOT having religion affect D/s? (3/12/2008 9:53:21 AM)

My religion has nothing to do with my d/s relationship except that I could not be in a relationship with someone who insisted I convert to his. If he wants to go to church Sunday morning, great. I'll meet him afterwards for brunch. Same as me going to synagogue Friday night or Saturday morning. He'll join me afterwards.

Lashra -> RE: How does NOT having religion affect D/s? (3/12/2008 10:42:36 AM)

We are both pagans, we are both happy with that. Our relationship is strong and fulfilling, it has nothing to do with our pagan beliefs. It just means we are on the same page.

If your going to bring up religion why not Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny.

MasterBlueTiger -> RE: How does NOT having religion affect D/s? (3/12/2008 11:44:56 AM)

I origianlly come from a conservative christian background. For a while I led the blissful sheltered life that as I long as I followed suit all would be wll with the world. That crashed when I learned there were a lot of good people outside of the christian faith. To me having good intentions and being a good person is more important than the specific minutia of a specific belief.
Don't get me wrong, I have met some outstanding christians with an insatiable desire to do good and help others. Likewise I have met those who just seem to do it to fit in. Some who beleive one thing one moment, hear a suave sermon, and beleive something totaly different the next. And lastly there are those who hear a sermon about being good, then go home and act in the completely opposite manner. It all just became to much for me.
Right now, I'm in a state of flux. Personally experiencing things of a spiritual nature, as well as those that could be considered paranormal, has led me to beleive that there is more to this world than meets the eye. I just have not figured out what that is yet.
Sorry to ramble on, guess I had more to say than I thought.[:)]

catize -> RE: How does NOT having religion affect D/s? (3/12/2008 4:08:59 PM)

I lack an interest in the spiritual and I can’t relate to what others describe as a need to explore/expand/fulfill their spirituality.  That being said, I’m perfectly happy to let others believe what they want as long as they return the favor.
R. practices Transcendental Meditation.  I have asked him questions about it because I am curious but have not felt compelled to follow or believe the same.  S. is an agnostic like me and as such we seldom discuss it because our thoughts are so similar.
What is disturbing to me are people who think that if one s not religious and/or spiritual then you cannot be good or moral or ethical.  But maybe that is another topic!

That is what the church of Satan preaches ;)

Yes. But they still tie it to these absurd rituals, and it's still a religion. I'm not buying a thinly veiled attempt by an old carney to hijack simple humanism-sorry.

Contemporary Satanism is more a focus on you as the ultimate God, and there's a lot in it to respect, from an agnostic point of view. Of course we still have occult Satanism, and Satanism that focuses on God as the demiurge, but really the three have next to nothing to do with each other.

Six.

That which is inside of ourselves.

I may not pray before I play, but whorship and commandments are always welcome.

Very few people base their life around the existence of St. Nicholas, or the furry egg hider. Not saying they don't, mind you, just that the number is more or less insignificent. Now the Flying Spaghetti Monster is another case entirely.

The ten commandments, as I see them from a non Christian point of view are great, wonderful sense and right.

Depending on my location I sometimes have difficulty with the one that says I shouldn’t covet my neighbor’s ass.  [:D]

CuriousLord -> RE: How does NOT having religion affect D/s? (3/12/2008 5:20:04 PM)

Because of my lack of religious assumption, I'm simply without fear and guilt in my practices.  I adhere to my own principles; I'm not submissive to the collective religious imagination.  And I'm content here.

kyraofMists -> RE: How does NOT having religion affect D/s? (3/12/2008 5:20:42 PM)

I am not religious but he and Alandra are catholic.  It has not been an issue for us in any way.  At dinner a prayer is said with the kids and I am quiet and respectful of that time.  There may be a time that I am required to attend a service with them, but I am not required to have the same beliefs that they do.

I've explored a lot of religious ideas over the years-I finally gave up on them all. I just can't bring myself to believe in spiritual things. It always ends up seeming silly, and fear based in the end.

But rather than bash me over my *lack* of faith-from those of you who do.. Can I hear from those of you who are not atheists-(which I just consider to be anti-religion, more waste of time.) but just don't bother with religion in your D/s relationships?

I honestly don't get this atheist bashing.  We've come so far because of rationality in the past few centuries - and now speaking up in the name of reason is being lumped in with the bigotry and the fundementalism.  It's an eerily similar pattern to I've seen feminism go through...people forget just what real bigotry is.

Sorry for derailing, but you made the snide.

More on topic, my D/s, and indeed my entire life, is without religion, and I do believe it is better for it.  I can focus on things I feel are really important, which is the happiness of myself and the people around me, understanding myself and my surroundings, and generally bettering my situation.

Vendaval -> RE: How does NOT having religion affect D/s? (3/12/2008 5:42:26 PM)

I have my own Gaia/Pagan beliefs and do not expect my partners to have the same beliefs.  One slave is agnostic and the other follows stoicism, based on Greek philosophy.  We all respect each other enough that there are no problems.

As a militant agnostic, I can honestly say religion has never been an issue for me specifically with regard to BDSM unless it was a case where someone believed that their particular religion meant that BDSM was "evil" or "verboten" or what have you.

In short, I don't whip/cuff/fuck people based on their belief in (no) God(s).  It is, truly, a non-issue in that regard.
