LadyEllen -> Kittens! (3/13/2008 9:30:12 PM)

Well, I got back from my meeting in Birmingham at around 5pm this evening, to be greeted by my two pregnant cats as usual. I fed them both and sat down to relax a while, whereupon Pepper (the Lassie of felines - always telling me something) started miaowing even more than usual. She climbed into the kittening nest I'd built for her sister (whose offspring I expected first) and started yowling. Her sister, who had been watching until this point, and heavily pregnant herself, got spooked and ran to hide!

Just before 7pm came the first kitten! A grey coloured baby of the exact same colour and patterning as the suspected father (a pedigree blue shorthair or some such). The kids dashed over, my friends dashed over. Then nothing. Everyone left.

Then just after 10pm - and quite unexpectedly came the second! Pepper is black and white like the Felix cat, and this kitten was just like her, except grey and white.

And then at half past eleven the third - black all over. Where that colouring came from I dont know - somewhere far back in the mists of genetic history presumably.

Mom and babies doing OK, but frustrating and hilarious to watch the kittens trying to find a teat! Still they latched on in the end and had a feed. And Pepper has eaten a double helping of supper and drank some water - which she never normally does.

And here I am, whilst theyre all sleeping, still awake just in case. And Auntie Tess is most unimpressed - I wonder if she understands that she has the same thing coming in a day or so?

Good luck finding homes for the kittens.

SunNMoon -> RE: Kittens! (3/13/2008 9:36:36 PM)

Yay Lady E. I'm glad to her that the mama and the babies are doing well. [:)] I know you've been looking forward to this for sometime. And Tess is going to have her's soon. You are going to have a very full house of little fur balls. Are the kittens being as cute as can be?

chaosforge -> RE: Kittens! (3/13/2008 9:39:02 PM)

Hi All

Thanks! Yes, we have homes for about five kittens at the moment, so once Tess has had her's I'm expecting maybe two or three to find homes for. The grey and the grey and white have already been picked out by aspiring human pets!

We've taken lots of pictures - maybe I'll have to make a FaceBook account or something to put them all on?

DaddyLongStroke -> RE: Kittens! (3/14/2008 4:30:49 AM)

Hmmm....I wonder if there are any people out there that could possibly hate kittens?  Nah

divi -> RE: Kittens! (3/14/2008 4:48:01 AM)

I'd have to say DLS.. the same people who hate puppies and rainbows

DaddyLongStroke -> RE: Kittens! (3/14/2008 4:49:46 AM)

Don't forget dandelions....

i'm sorry, i just can't understand why you haven't had your cats spayed. i foster pregnant cats every year during "kitten season" and i've witnessed numerous births, played midwife to all of them, seen the distress, the pain in Mama cat's eyes, not understanding what the heck is happening to her.  i've seen new mom's dumped at shelters while in labor because the owner didn't want to be bothered. Cats/dogs aren't "fixed" because folks want to see a birth then the adult is abandoned while the owners decide to keep a kitten.
Ok, i've vented. Thanks for "listening".

LadyEllen -> RE: Kittens! (3/14/2008 6:23:45 AM)

Well, I'm sorry - but I aint that kind of person who would dump either the moms or the kittens. I spent the whole night with Pepper, comforting her - not that she needed much more than assurance.

True, I did intend to get them done - but they got pregnant and I wasnt prepared to have their offspring aborted for my convenience. As soon as the kittens are ready to go to their new homes, both cats are off to the vets.

But I'm glad that people like you come to the rescue of cats and kittens whose hosts lack the ability or will to meet their responsibilities. Its a commitment for life as far as I'm concerned and as such I treat my cats in a manner akin to that of my kids - I wouldnt abandon my kids or harm them, so I wouldnt do either to my cats either.

awww, fluffy babies, congrats.  i want a new kitten, a black and white one.
i lost two this year since moving to the new neighborhood.  One to a car and the other to a stupid human who lets their pit bull run wild.  my remaining cat is strickly an indoor cat now!  As will any others i get from now on.

To the person above me.  Sometimes, it is so expensive to get a cat fixed.  i know, not an excuse.  When i lived in California, i was only able to get my cats fixed because California's humane society gave vouchers to those who were on the state insurance (medical) that saved alot of money.  i only paid $80 for my cat to get spayed, all shots, warmed, and the flea dip. And a local non profit shelter had a program called "friends for life" where one could get two cats fixed for $20.  A huge lose for the vet doing the fixen, but in the long run, a huge win for the community.
