pahunkboy -> your electronic trash? where is it and why (3/14/2008 8:32:09 AM)

Ok-  a new PC came.  I got tired of 1/2 working pieces everyhwere.  Now to clear space. What do you do with your electronic junk?

I like to have spares but at times it seems out of control.  This now makes 7 computers in my place. only 2 work well enough.   when the pipe broke im all calm- yet when the net is down i am upset. lol.

what do you throw out. what do you keep- how much electronic other do you have?  why where= tell us here.

I take it apart to try to see how things work. If it is broken anyway I have nothing to lose. Although with solid state technology taking it apart tends to give nothing away anymore sadly.[8|]

i let my kids take them apart, and when its down to easily managable peices, i take it to the recyclers.
one time i put a pc in the dumpster, the very next day i read about someone who did the same and found their
info all over the net. ill NEVER do that again!

That is wise but at some point your PC has to be sold on etc.

I've used this in the past to wipe a disk:

http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/products/drivecleanser/ss-builtin.html

you can also just remove the HDD and destroy it.

i still havent set the new one up.  I am hard on computers. I break several of them, this due to my exploratitive nature.  ild like things to work. argh. a buddy was like- oh you should not have bougfht one- but knowing his 'ill sell you a widget" mentality i may or may not have been further along. it is rather nice to upgrade things.  this cheap junk is why now energy and food is higher- cos we wanted cheap gadgetry galore.

anyhow- i have $525 spent on this latest escapade-if i get my rebates- brings it down to $400.  i would have wanted to new moniter either way.   oh this was on a re-furbished unit.   xp.  not vista which everyone says is crap.

Hard drives get destroyed, the rest I follow the thought process that trash is trash and I don't need it laying around my house creating clutter.

Considering it is toxic waste or something like that.  Any old electronics we save up until the one day a year you can get rid of them and actually have someone accept them.  There is usually a limit on how much you can give away that day as well.

If I remember correctly the EPA banned all solid state circuitry going to the dump.   It has to go to a recycler.   Reason   Lead in the soder connections poluting the ground water.   Also there is some gold in there if you know where to find it.

thrift stores no longer take such as a donation.   it is a big problem.

Our local Goodwill does.

Just because you wipe a hard drive doesn't mean someone else can't go in and do a forensic recovery.

An ex once told me that the only way he CAN'T restore a drive is if you wipe it 10 times, smash it with a hammer, drop it off the side of a boat into the ocean AND never ever tell ANYONE where you dropped it.

There is no one more dangerous in the world than a nosy geek!

anyone who explores my hard drives is gonna find messy HUGE spurting cocks that.....ER nevermind.  lol

Destroy the harddrives and piecemeal the rest of the stuff on Ebay. You'd be amazed at what people will buy and you can make a few bucks to boot. ::chuckles::

pahunkboy -> RE: your electronic trash? where is it and why (3/14/2008 12:16:33 PM)

this is where -- well-  it would be cool to say- ok- i have this stuff....make me soemthing better of what i have and you may keep the x-y-z.    the characters i bump into tho arent the most reliable.   the buddy i can trust tends to be alot of talk...no results.  he likes to bark.

a dude that could help- i dont want him in my house.    he is too  ---con-artisty.  he did in fact serve time in the slammer- when his gf begged me to let him live here i said "No".

be that as it may- at some point the junk will have to go bye byes. i seen on free cycle "must take all".  so that could be in the future.

as for ebay- i am no good at that.     but i do see your point tho-  thanks!!  :-)

People are so paranoid about hard drive file recovery. When the entire contents of a disk has been overwritten twenty times with random sequences the only thing being recovered from that is the divine.

BossyShoeBitch -> RE: your electronic trash? where is it and why (3/14/2008 12:26:19 PM)

Take the memory out of your old computers and use it in the new computer to increase your ram.. You can use the hard drive from your most recent computer as a 2nd hard drive in the new computer (back everything else up to it.. use it for large files you download etc..)
Call your local waste management company to see what their procedures are for getting rid of the rest.. Unless you have an affinity for selling that stuff, its going to sit in your house, cluttering things up until you have, oh say, SEVEN old computers lying around collecting dust.. :-)

pahunkboy -> RE: your electronic trash? where is it and why (3/14/2008 12:36:38 PM)

argh. to find every disk now to install all- yikes.

FRSguy -> RE: your electronic trash? where is it and why (3/14/2008 12:45:16 PM)

Old junk.... if you have kids hand them down if you have little kids make them into bots.
new just .... get a kvm switch... remember your computers dont have to be where you are... put the best one at your desk the rest can go in the basement and you can remote into them... old computers work great for network storage especially if you use a lot of mp3's and movies... put the old computers in the basement or out with your washer and dryer and then fill those hard drives up with crap and share it out on wireless... use something like an old PDA with internet for a player and network in through a shared folder... you can also but an adaptor at radio shack to put tunes and moves through your entertainment system... you can hook an old computer behind your entertainment system and connect using a wireless mouse and keyboard to read email watch / record movies from your tv and dont forget the sling box!
