I’m not saying people should have to live with their defeats but they shouldn’t be always made to feel like something needs fixing either.

Depression is a serious illness: it's not a defeat. It's not about "fixing something"; it's about making someone better.

Well, FC, people seek out help because they don't like the way they're feeling, or things that used to be pleasurable are no longer pleasurable, that sort of thing.  If they don't want "fixing", then they don't.  I would imagine that most people that have been helped by psych meds prefer the way they feel when they can experience pleasure vs. the way they feel when they cannot.  Except the manics that are very creative in their manic phase... they tend to not take their meds because it kills their creativity (yet their manic phase drives everyone they come into contact with to the loony bin).

PS to doll:  I know the way the meds work, I was commenting on something FC said about "altering moods".

It is not "normal" to be so depressed that you want to die...to cry for hours and hours everyday...to be so anxious that you can not and do not leave your house for over a year...not even to check the mail.

just wondering, do you know any natural ways to release dopamine?

kittinSol -> RE: My psych meds kill my sex drive. (3/15/2008 11:03:51 AM)

It "comes" in generic form too: the molecule's name is "bupropion".

Maybe you have a PC dictionary handy so I can choose the words that don't offend people more carefully. Obviously we don't fix peoples broken legs, nope we make their legs better.[:D]

This will probably anger you more but when I said defeats I meant defects.

kittinSol -> RE: My psych meds kill my sex drive. (3/15/2008 11:08:13 AM)

It's not because your wording was wrong that I was offended :-) .

Sorry to hear that.....

By my age a man will have proven it a fact many, many times before.

And be careful dammit, that's my ego you're taking pot shots at. I will spank you ass. (it helps me feel better)

Okay, you've impressed us all with the fact that you're an un-PC freethinker. Do you have anything constructive or positive to share?  If not, you could just not participate in a discussion to which you obviously don't relate.

Nor should they be made to live in accordance with your personal concept of "what's intended" (by whom?) or what's right. Why anyone should care about the opinion of one who is ignorant on the subject is not clear to me.

You show your ignorance by assuming you know anything about me by presuming me ignorant. If you only care to read things I write as being offensive that is your problem not mine. I wrote something in conversation with you I know not to bother and do the same in future.

Kalista07 -> RE: My psych meds kill my sex drive. (3/15/2008 1:22:15 PM)

i've never understood why people who aren't perscribed anti-depressants have such strong opinions about them being perscribed for everyone else. i've been on them since i was abou 20 years old. In the past 13 years, i've come to admit and accept that i not only need them, but that they make my quality of life much better (not just for me but for those around me as well). Fortunately for me, i've found a combination of medications that do not affect my sex drive.
i suppose i will never understood how these people with such strong beliefs against medications are so angry that some of us need those medications. Seriously, what is the fear involved there? Are You afraid someone at some point is going to come, hold you down, and force You to swallow the pills? Because i'm fairly convinvced that's not going to happen.
i know some people love to make insinuations or accusations that people who are on anti-depressant medications are some how weaker or lesser than the rest of 'normal' society. i know for a fact, in my life, that's not accurate. i know that i have lived and survived many things that most people would have lost their minds at.

I know some people that are fucking pricks.

Is anyone going to actually read what I wrote rather than just write about what they think I wrote?

FullCircle,
Okay i will attempt to reply to what you'v actually written. Although, i've read it, reread it, and reread it numerous times and i apologize i'm just not pulling that much out of it. However, here goes:
I tend to worry with drugs intended to change moods because it is so much harder to define who a person was meant to be that way. If your leg is broken it needs to be fixed that is obvious, I suppose you could argue if you are depressed that needs fixing too but the balance is hard in terms of ensuring the thing the person was meant to be isn’t altered too much.

i guess i'm confused by how you define who was 'meant' to be depressed and who wasn't? What are the characteristics involved in that? i'm being serious and not snarky, so i hope you can answer my questions with the thought and detail that i've attempted to answer yours. i'm not sure how or why you consider the fact that my brain can't process serotonin appropriately a defect, but i'm not here to change your mind.

i think part of where your confusion (or frustration) may be entering into this conversation is that medications are not created or designed to alter a person's personality. They are not designed to alter who and what a person is. That is still there, they are who they are.  i think , for me personally, medication allows me to maintain somewhat of a constant level of emotion and thought. i'm not sitting here thinking about ways to kill myself 24/7 or how much i suck or blah blah blah blah. However, i do still have periods of "feeling" depressed, i still experience sadness, joy, loneliness, etc.
i'm not sure if i've answered your questions adequately, however i gave it my best shot,
Kali
