I recognize 3 races    Cacazoid, Mongoloid, Negroid (can't spell so might not be spelt right).  The rest is BS

That makes me BS then. Thanks!

Really?   Or are you confusing an ethnic grouping for a biological (scientific) race?

We scientists call that "Bullcacazoid".

sigh.

God Reality    You are so politically correct.   Cowboys just call it bull shit.   LOL

Since when is there only one type of plumber in the phone book?  There are lots of sub sets of type of plumbers.  You wouldn't hire one who cleans out septic tanks to install a new radiator system.

kittinSol -> RE: The Human Race. (3/15/2008 11:27:11 AM)

Why do ignorant people always call scientific knowledge "political correctness"?

seeksfemslave -> RE: The Human Race. (3/15/2008 11:52:41 AM)

The proposition, whether true or not, that because there is only one race therefore all "human types" are basically the same is at best a deceit and at worst an outright lie.
It follows that when attempts are made to incorporate that proposition   ( should have said conclusion) into public policy the result is failure.
Let us pursue truth rather than "wishfull thinking" falsehoods.

Face  truth squarely in the face and there is some chance of progress.
Act in denial of  truth and the result is error and confusion.
Confucious knew that, I know it and now there is no excuse, you all know it too
If we dont know let us also take  that into account.

I think I am developing illusions of grandeur or am I just recognising the truth about myself.

OK   Here it is

In physical anthropology the term is one of the three general racial classifications of humansCaucasoid, Mongoloid and Negroid. Under this classification scheme, humans are divisible into broad sub-groups based on phenotypic characteristics such as cranial and skeletal morphology. Such classifications remain in use today in the fields of anthropology and forensics to help identify the ethnicity, lineage and origin of human remains.

now under ethnicity, my sons are both African American.    Their mother (an italian) was born in Africa and I am American.   So their employers count then as African American.   But they are cacasoid.

FullCircle -> RE: The Human Race. (3/15/2008 12:31:40 PM)

The only thing that fascinates me about this topic is why one day someone chose these three groups to divide us all up into without even considering other obvious differences; things such as eye colour and hair colour. Why is it some things people are prepared to look past as being part of their culture but other things they aren’t? For all those people who think you can’t genetically define a race well at least we can tell what eye colour they have genetically but for some reason this isn’t classed as race?

So in conclusion after all this twittering race is made up of more than genetics alone and includes such things as cultural heritage, shock horror none of us are anthropologists.[:D]

Some people just can't keep up.

There IS another thread on race going, you know, Aneirin.

Now, I know righties are usually reading-challenged, but maybe, just MAYBE, one of them can somehow manage to move beyond the 19th century and absorb new information.

Ignorance.

Here we go again, eh? (it's not like there aren't any links to actual biology and genetics on the other thread.

It's not ignorance HK, it's the desperate need to garner some attention.  The only meaning left to a nobody is to be somebody's enemy.  That's so easy: all you have to do is pretend to adopt racist beliefs and suddenly all the people who would otherwise pass you by suddenly stop and notice you.  Most children grow out of it.  The sad grow into it.

The human race, made up of so many different races, but all just people from different parts of the world, their genetics, no fault of their own, just a product of their ancestors.

So why, in this world of civilised and learned men do we still seek to classify people into types, races etc?

What practical use does seeking to classify people serve ?

Will we ever be any different?

I understand the human part but why does it have to be a race????[:)]

Notice that they are calling out a phenotype, not genotype.  Genetically there is more variation among members of a given "race" than there is between them.

We went through a long discussion of this a few months ago.

We're all African.

Wasn't there some recent discovery suggesting the origin of man wasn't Africa?

You're definitely on to something there, Licks. Weak individuals often resort to join a group (or a "pack") in order to find a common identity. As you put it so well, the group defines itself because it is different from other groups, who become its enemies: it's us, and them.

Classifying is good for making a quick reference of possible experiences, and characteristics.

The problem isn’t in classifying; it is in believing the thing being classified, must stay within the restraints of a given classification, and that the general rule applies to all.

Possibly, though I would caution against beginning to calculate loss, before the game is over. It could hamper the spirits of the team.

Not to mention, you can never predict what the underdogs might do; they tend to act out of desperation near the end.

Of course, if my calculations are correct, at exact time of loss; said loss will be of no consequence.
