Well, all I can say is that the alcoholics I've known, upon interview, have revealed the reasons for their drinking, which seem to centre around social and psychological problems. No doubt there is a genetic predisposition in some, but its notable that I dont come across whole families of alcoholics, just one member of a family who for whatever reason found that drink helped them to cope in the early days but has since become the problem. And no, not one of them ever went to therapy - and that seems to be because therapy is perceived as weak, and anything is better than being considered weak - for its their inner self identity of weakness which they must hide from all and are drowning with alcohol.
