I remember the time very well. At that time I was in Poland and well known in Polish theatre. I was asked what I thought about Iraq. I merely stated that my opinion was the one expressed by the late Pope John Paul II, that military intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq was not the solution. Five years later my life and circumstances have changed, but my stance on Iraq hasn't. I refuse to pick and choose like other people. My prayers go out to ALL the people who have lost their lives in both Iraq and Afghanistan and ALL the families irrespective of whether they have been bereaved or are living with the fear or uncertainty that a loved one is in danger. My prayers go out for the dead servicemen and their families, irrespective of their nationality. My prayers also go out for the brave men and women who have been sent to such places as Iraq and Afghanistan as journalists, reporters and photographers and who are just as much on the front line and in the line of fire as the soldiers but who do not carry weapons. My prayers go out especially to those journalists, reporters and photographers who have been killed whilst gathering the information for everyone else - including the military - and for the families who have lost loved ones on such assignments. My prayers go out for the Iraqis and Afghans - to those who have been killed, bereaved, tortured, imprisoned, kidnapped, and hope that one day they will find it within themselves to overlook differences in ethnicity and religion and stand together as brothers and sisters of a united nation and Islam. I pray for the children growing up in such places of Iraq and Afghanistan, many of who have lost either parents, relatives, or friends, those who have lost limbs or suffered terrible injuries, those who are suffering, who do not have food, adequate access to medical treatment, those are having to live each day with not just the effects of the war, the poverty, the terror, but also that they will be able to grow up to find a much better future than the one they are facing now. I pray for those who are behind these terrible atrocities and who have caused the deaths, misery and suffering of hundreds of thousands of people and pray that one day they will be guided to enough wisdom to seek out and desire peace far more than their desire or acceptance of hatred, conflict and war. Finally I pray for those who are still unable to see or understand that every person is a human being that they may one day find it within themselves the wisdom and knowledge enough to understand that the value of a human life is the same for every person. I pray that these people will find the wisdom to understand that freedom and life are God given and both recognise a person for being human, and not for any particular aspect or characteristic of their person.
