An irrelevant Izzard quote:

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people, and monkeys do too (if they have a gun).”

And:

"I grew up in Europe, where the history comes from."

Muahahaha.

I wonder if Lucky has seen that one [:D] .

Picture this - Eddie Izzard as the next Dr.Who... I think that would pretty much ROCK.

Only if he does the 'Executive Transvestite' Dr. Who.

Ok, with talk about, 'Carry on up the Khyber' ,one of a series of very successful politically incorrect  'Carry on ',films of the last millenium, I was wondering how our past brand of humour affected others in other countries, like most of you in the US.

Do you find our TV humour good or bad, both past, i.e.  the politically incorrect, 'Benny Hill, Carry on,  Faulty Towers, Bless this house' etc or our modern tv humour? and modern?

I must admit, I cannot name any classic modern material off hand, as my humour is definately of the past millenium.

Aneirin, sure, I think most Americans like it.
We get plenty of it in here, don't we?

I don't know what you get of our tv, is why I am asking.

Some of your exported humour, that I am lost on. I also despise canned laughter, it happens as if it were a cue to laugh as though the viewer needs to be told where a funny bit is. Get really bored, listen to the canned laughter,and its the same laughter each time, or sometimes it varies between two or three recordings.

kittinSol -> RE: British Humour ? (3/20/2008 8:06:31 AM)

I think that was Eddie's point... he also said this:

"And the National Rifle Association says that, "Guns don't kill people, people do,” but I think the gun helps, you know? I think it helps. I just think just standing there going, "Bang!" That's not going to kill too many people, is it? You'd have to be really dodgy on the heart to have that.”

GreedyTop -> RE: British Humour ? (3/20/2008 8:09:59 AM)

Americans think they love British humour, but they typically don't get it . . . .

The self-deprecation is another thing that people don't usually get in the USA - it's hard for ultra competitive people such as Americans to understand why anyone would want to put themselves down - but it's the only thing the British are good at. Right :-) ?

Humour is one thing that gives the British Isles a definite cultural lead, imnsho.

kittenSol, you've hit it dead on with those three comments.  There's a wonderful book called "Watching the English," by Kate Fox.  One of the things she cites that distinguishes the English from the rest of the world is their sarcastic, self-deprecating humour, and how difficult it is for others to "get."  One of my biggest frustrations about living in the US is how often I have to explain to the natives that what I just I said was a joke.  Or perhaps it's because I'm just not that funny.

GreedyTop -> RE: British Humour ? (3/20/2008 8:11:30 AM)

remind me to smack you when I get there *grin*

GreedyTop -> RE: British Humour ? (3/20/2008 8:12:52 AM)

see, I love the self deprecating / sarcastic humour

but thats just my nature...

(damn, hanging out with you Brits is affecting my spelling.... LOL)
