I think that was Eddie's point... he also said this:

The self-deprecation is another thing that people don't usually get in the USA - it's hard for ultra competitive people such as Americans to understand why anyone would want to put themselves down - but it's the only thing the British are good at. Right :-) ?

kittenSol, you've hit it dead on with those three comments. There's a wonderful book called "Watching the English," by Kate Fox. One of the things she cites that distinguishes the English from the rest of the world is their sarcastic, self-deprecating humour, and how difficult it is for others to "get." One of my biggest frustrations about living in the US is how often I have to explain to the natives that what I just I said was a joke. Or perhaps it's because I'm just not that funny.
