British Humour ? (Full Version)

Ok, with talk about, 'Carry on up the Khyber' ,one of a series of very successful politically incorrect  'Carry on ',films of the last millenium, I was wondering how our past brand of humour affected others in other countries, like most of you in the US.

Do you find our TV humour good or bad, both past, i.e.  the politically incorrect, 'Benny Hill, Carry on,  Faulty Towers, Bless this house' etc or our modern tv humour? and modern?

I must admit, I cannot name any classic modern material off hand, as my humour is definately of the past millenium.

Americans think they love British humour, but they typically don't get it. I experimented with "The League of Gentlemen" and in a room full of people, only one other than myself got it. He was seventeen years old, so perhaps it was his yoof wot did it. Mind you, everyone loves Monty Python... or so they say. (I love Monty Python.) In the mid nineties there was a show called "Smack the Pony" which I liked a lot... I spent a lot of my uni years watching Blackadder. Father Ted rocked (pity he's dead)!

And who can forget Vic Reeves and Eddie Izzard?!!!

The self-deprecation is another thing that people don't usually get in the USA - it's hard for ultra competitive people such as Americans to understand why anyone would want to put themselves down - but it's the only thing the British are good at. Right :-) ?

Humour is one thing that gives the British Isles a definite cultural lead, imnsho.

Some of My favorite shows.

I get the Humor, in fact I find British Comedy to be funnier than US shows. The comedy is sharp and witty and I all around perfer the BBC Drama's and Comedies to just about anything the US produces.

Which is cool. I wonder why tv and movie producers buy the rights to British films and tv shows and dilute them into the watery crap I was unfortunate to watch with "The Office", for example. The original is funny; the american version sucks.

Any idea why they do it?

I was watching "Monty Python's Flying Circus" when PBS was still broadcasting in black and white(early 70s)

Aneirin, sure, I think most Americans like it.
We get plenty of it in here, don't we?

I have to echo Steel.. (well, I'm pretty sure I GET it..LOL I could be wrong...).. I love Fawlty Towers, Are you Being Served, Benny Hill, Keeping up appearances..

Havent seen any of them in ages, I have basic cable, so I don't get the channels that show them anymore :(  These days, I'm limited to the new version of Dr Who (which I do enjoy!). 

Guess I'll find out if I get Brit humor when I'm in England in a couple of weeks....

There is no doubt whatsover that a goldmine of Brit Situation Comedy exists.
I also suspect but do not know that it does not go down well in the US.
A lot involves dialect which just doesnt travel.

Having said that I think the best US sitcoms. are pretty damn good.
Cheers, Frazier Becker spring to mind.
I dont like Daphne the Brit in Frazier.
Most I speak to dont like Frazier, but I just dont care. The best episodes are great.

Never forget 8 simple rules with John Ritter tho' again those that know of it dont seem to have liked it much. I did.

Holy Grail, along with anyone else who has some semblance of humor, the killer rabbit is the greatest cinematic invention...ever.

And I like Appearances....I havent the slightest idea why.

Oh yes, and Shaun of the Dead.

True,most of the reality shows and song/dance competition shows(American Idol),are from the UK.

There`s a bit of a brain drain here,I guess.

I`m soooooooo sick of movie remakes/do-overs.

The sequel thing is bad enough.

I don`t care if it`s British.I go for quality.

I get sad when the American shows that have a bit of wit about them get cancelled (Sports night and studio 60 were comedy gold but people didnt seem to appriciate it)

I watched an Izzard tape from the us the amount of times he said "No? Not Funny? Ok I've got plenty more" was unreal! Esp seeing as he was on fire.

I think as kitty said there is a real misunderstanding of self deprication (also sarcasm)

Spaced and Big train and the Mighty Boosh would never fair very well in the US because they are SO British, even the Office had to be 'remade'. Its so sad :(
