Fireplay covers a broad spectrum of activities from fire-on-skin, through pyrotechnics to fire whipping.

One of the nice things is that a dominant can learn most of the techniques using his or her own skin as a test base. This leads both to immediate information that a technique is not being practiced correctly and puts a degree of restraint in place that is very refreshing.

The most simple technique is fire-on-skin where the dominant puts a layer of alcohol in the submissive's skin, lets it burn for a moment and extinguishes it with his or her hand.

Fire whipping uses a fireproof whip (often kelvar) [note: I just received some kelvar falls for my singletail but I'll be using them for a type of different scene] The whip has a flamable liquid on it and is ignited.

Some dominants also use flash cotton or flash paper to create explosive effects on a submissive's body.

I'd also add that it's not something I recommend you start doing after only researching online. Find someone experienced in your area to tutor you.

thank you JohnWarren, that gives me something to think about!

I agree! Fire is not something you want to play with on your own, with no instruction. I would also recommend that when you DO eventually play with fire, you have a third person present, in case of emergency.

There are a lot of safety issues inherent in fire play, and one of them is the bottom's own skin. One thing I want to point out is that, when putting an alcohol mixture on skin, it's important to pay attention to any indentations or scars where the fluid can "pool." Pooling will cause the flame to burn longer in that area, and increase the risk of injury.

John, Excellent synopsis as always. Though, there are a few things I'd like to add.

I have been a long time fireplayer. One thing that I think is critical to remember is, everyone's differant. No 2 bottoms will react the same to the alcohol on the skin. I am someone who really sucks the alcohol up, regardless of whether I layer on moisturizer that day or not. I don't have dry skin, though it has been said that I need to be 'varnished' good to actually get the alcohol to ignite.

I mention this because for someone who is new to Topping fireplay, using one's own skin may not be a good enough indicator of how the bottom will react. This type of play takes patience to learn how the bottom reacts to the fuel (i.e. the alcohol). Knowing how my body tends to suck it in, we've tried to use 90% rather than the lower % regular isopropal alchohol redily available in the drug store. Also, we always get a fresh bottle, as the fresher alcohol seems to work better.

Flash cotton can be purchased at costume stores or places that magicians or those doing tech theater my purchase their items. It's worth it. It's a hell of a lot of fun to use in a fireplay scene.

Good luck to you and play safe!

Lily

Make sure that any area of the body where an open flame comes into contact, is free of hair. It is easy to forget about this, and unpleasent when you do.

Thank you everybody..
The more info I can get the better... I know it is wierd but I want to know everything I can about it before I decide to actually do it or not do it depending.
She is waiting patiently for me to come to a decision about this, but we are to talk about it Friday night...

Below are notes from the fireplay workshop we teach (It Only Takes A Spark: Fireplay With Flash!). Please take into consideration that these are notes that are handed out to people who attend the class and should not be used as a substitution for personal instruction.

FIREPLAY

Because of the primal nature of flames and the collective unconscious fear of fire, fireplay can tap into very strong emotional and psychological reactions. It is important to have respect for the chaotic, elemental nature of fire. Fire play is the only play form where there are always at least three living entities involved in the play. Fire is living and breathing and can dominate anything if not controlled.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
·Fire extinguisher
·Cotton towel (synthetic could melt)
·Ice and ice water
·Commercial burn treatment and triple antibiotic cream
·Hair Ties
·Second person
·Location (space, flammables, drafts, equipment area)
·Equipment Inspection
·Aftercare and clean-up

PLAY EQUIPMENT
·70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). We advise not using 90% isopropyl, lighter fluid, kerosene or other fuels.
·Wide bottom, wide mouth stable non-flammable container to hold alcohol
·Plate or Wide bottom, wide mouth stable non-flammable container to hold used torches
·Cotton Balls. 100% cotton. DO NOT use ‘cosmetic puffs’ as the synthetic fibers will melt.
·Wide candle on a steady base. Lighter.
·Torches/Batons (100% cotton tops. No glue or wire)
·Cupping Supplies (small leather rounds, glass cups, baby oil)
·ADVANCED TECHNIQUES: Flash Cotton, Devil’s Fire, Fire Balls, Glycerin, Flaming Spankings, Fire Flogging, Sparklers, Violet Wand, fire breathing, fire swallowing

FIRE ALARM
·Do not put fire on the face. Avoid mucous membrane areas until you have ample fireplay experience.
·Do not play on a bed or mattress. Avoid carpeting if possible.
·Avoid areas of the skin that have heavy abrasions or infections
·Beware of long hair, loose clothing or other combustible items near the play area
·DO NOT play while drinking or doing drugs. This includes poppers, which can ignite.
·Skin should be clean, dry and free from oils and creams.
·If fire gets out of control, use a wet towel to extinguish the flames. Do not throw water on the body. Spilled alcohol floats on water.
·Be aware of any natural ‘crevices’ that alcohol may pool in: navel, genitals, folds in skin.
·Skin can be sensitive and fragile after fireplay. Heavy percussion play after a fire scene can result in open wounds.

Master Archer and I never perform fireplay without another person present: someone to be our safety. If the fire gets out of control Master takes care of me (or whoever is the flaming bottom) and the safety person takes over fire control.

Actually.....grinning...a few times Master Archer has told me not to shave my pubic area before fireplay..so he could singe it smooth!

IronBear -> RE: Fire Play (9/29/2005 8:02:37 PM)

The following is a document given to me by a sub who with her Master uses this regularly....

Objectives – Why do Devil’s Fire
The clear objective of Devil’s Fire play is to put the bottom into “subspace” through endorphin release. This technique – Devil’s Fire – is one of the most effective ways to excite the body’s endorphin system. The technique involves touching teaser pins (dissecting needles) heated to a yellow-white hot color to the bottom’s skin causing the body to react by releasing endorphins. It is this endorphin-release that is being sought

Devil’s Fire Safety Checklist
While Devil’s Fire is not applying direct flame to the bottom, there IS and open flame involved – the open flame of the heat source used to heat the teaser needles to a yellow-white color.

How to Use Devil’s Fire
Devil’s fire is a simple form of fireplay that uses needles and a heat source. It is an uncomplicated technique that produces dramatic results. As the heated needles are touched lightly to the body, the endorphin system interprets this as a severe burn
NOTE: you only touch the surface of the bottom’s skin with the tip of the needle, you do not puncture the skin with the point.
When the body senses pain, endorphins are released into the body and directed by the brain to the site of the pain. If the pain continues, the brain will send out a “flight” message to the body. If the bottom is secured and the brain realizes that it cannot run away from the pain, the brain then causes the body to produce more endorphins and redirects them to flood the brain in order to overcoming the “pain” feeling. This is the state called such things as “flying,” “endorphin high,” “the forever place” or “sub-space.” By varying the time between needle-touches on the body, the Top can learn to control the bottom’s endorphin high. For some bottoms, three or four quick touches can result in the rush of endorphins and a flying sensation. After the “flying” state is reached, repeating a touch and a short pause can cause a drifting sensation.

Oh wow.. thanks everyone.. that really gives me more to go on.. I think I have alot to think about in the next 24hrs...

DrkkMaster -> RE: Fire Play (10/1/2005 1:04:09 PM)

Thank you elegant for a well penned outline.
I want to stress the 70% and no higher alcohol point as well. I've given fireplay workshops on and off over the last few years, and always stress that more is not better in this case.
70% is easy to light, and more important, fairly easy to put out. I've allowed 70% to burn itself out on my skin with no more than first degree burns, were 90+ raises a blister, and it's a LOT harder to put out the flame.
My preference for wands are a seven inch long glass rod, 1/4 in diameter, and 2" bandage gauze stitched in place. I've used the same wands for several years, but you have to rough up the glass and use epoxy to start the gauze on the rod, or the end will slide off with possible unpredicted results.

While one does not actually puncture the skin on purpose the red-hot disecting probe does pierce the skin slightly and cause a few microscopic skin cells to explode. If the area is silent a popping sound can be heard.

The touched spots start to itch after a few moments..itching from under the skin similiar to the itch from nettles. Master uses this as predicament play...not allowing me to scratch until he commands.

Devil's Fire is sometimes refered to as micro-branding. A small spot does remain for a few hours to up to three days.

NOTE: Disecting probes/teasers are carbon steel. A regular sewing needle is not the same.

Nice idea.

Our torches/batons are heavy dowels with a copper coupling jammed on the end. The wadding is mop string (100% cotton) and surgical gauze (100% cotton).

That's more in the branding/scarification type of play.
