MzMia -> Bad Weather/Floods/Storms anyone? (3/21/2008 9:34:27 AM)

I just watched some coverage of the terrible floods they have been having
in the center of the U.S.A.
Houses floating down the river in Arkansas...I have never seen anything like that one.
They are really suffering in Missouri and the water is expected to rise.
I feel sorry for you all in the heartland right now.

Chicago is going to get 6-12 inches of snow, in SPRING!

I have to say, we may have some of the best weather period, in the MD/DC/VA area.

Our year round nightmare is the horrendus traffic!

I feel so sorry for the people suffering due to the floods, excessive rains, etc.

Is anyone here suffering through this weather, especially the floods?

I feel the same about Pa...we bitch and moan about the snow but really, we have nothing to complain about. I cannot imagine what these people are going through.

Pahunkboy the other day said that he feared getting wet feet as the river was rising. He wanted to know whether he should go sit on his roof, or whether to take refuge at the top of a hill.

I'm in Iowa, and not near any bodies of water, so am fine.

And not to make light of anyone's weather-related suffering, but this column cracks my ass up.

A big problem: many houses in the USA are built like straw huts - wood frames and lightweight dry walls do not a solid dwelling make.

Which explains the chains of houses carried away down stream, and the homes flying off in the wind.

Hi all.   This winter hasnt been bad in PA. Actually pretty mudane.  It does however go in cycles.   Maybe 10 year, who knows.  I do expect winters that several feet of snowfall, weekly. And severe cold.  It will occur again.... we just dont know when.

I can see the river from here.   The highway on the other side is open.   The first thing that happens is Route 11 closes due to water. I am not alarmed right now.    Memories of a brutal year-  well it was scarey when the last bridge out was closed.

Good to hear snow in Chicago. Family wanted me to visit this weekend.  I declined this time.

If the water DOES get high, I guess one simply moves the valuables up to the 2nd floor.

:-)

speaking of PA, I wish the state would finally ban burn barrel burning.

On the weather channel, they showed a house floating down the river {I think in Missouri}, it was terrible.
The house than crashed into the bottom of a bridge, and broke apart.
Then another woman who had extensive damage saying she had no flood insurance.

MzMia -> RE: Bad Weather/Floods/Storms anyone? (3/21/2008 10:08:38 AM)

Glad you are okay pahunk, hope the water does not rise.

The weather has been really weird the last 5-10 years, would not be surprised if they have
snow in May in Chicago.

instead of showing off new Easter shoes Sunday,  i'll be sporting my winter boots with my pants suit.  when Easter's in March, always expect snow and/or cold weather here.

I know. It's terrible to see... I don't know what the solution is. So many houses are built on seemingly dodgy structural engineering, they're bound to fly away when the shit hits the fan weatherwise :-( . I hope there's enough of a safety net for people facing such upheaval... but I fear this may not be the case.

I also read in the NYT that catastrophe insurance was a booming business. Unsurprisingly.

there's documented evidence that it has snowed in June in Chicago

I'm working from home today since it's Friday and I've had enough waiting for the "L' in the snow. I just went to the window and checked the street, looks like I've gotten maybe 2 inches of snow so far.[sm=river.gif]

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Bad Weather/Floods/Storms anyone? (3/21/2008 10:23:53 AM)

32 F here in Madison, Wisconsin - snowing to continue through the night - up to 10" accumulation which could cause the total accumulation for the year so far to hit 100" - have already broken the record of 130 years - WooHoo! - not! - lol
