Will be released this coming December with Keanu Reeves starring as Klaatu.  I have my doubts given how bad "The War of the Worlds" was but maybe it will be surprisingly good.

Um... the answer is right there in front of you: Kennu Reeves.

He's supposed to hold a candle to Michael Rennie? (condecending laugh!)

No one can hold a candle to Michael Rennie. But it should be good to see....

Hollywood couldn't tell a decent story to save the world from itself these days. If Klaatu is a fucked up druggy Reves will do a bang up jub I'm sure - he was great in Scanner Darkly and the Bill and Td adventurs.

It can never be as good as the original. Just like War of the Worlds could never be.

We are in the age of the remakes at this point. Hollywood seems to have run out of originality. They've resorted to remaking classics and screwing them up.

Zensee, you nailed it!
What the hell is wrong with "Hollywood" these days?
Just look at the *crap* t.v. shows they come out with! Fucking Garbage!
Maybe they need a massive injection of fresh talent. They're getting STALE!
GOD, if I see *another* "new" Cop Show!
"Brand new season, TWENTY SEVEN new Cop Shows!"
Cop buddy shows, cop funny shows, women cop shows, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp.....
They seem to have a lack of ideas out there!
And everything is all "special effects."
I thought the people in that industry were supposed to be "talented?"

Maybe Keanu would have been better as Gort?

Gort will undoubtedly be CGI.  Since it seems silly to portray the Earth as a nuclear threat to the Universe, I can't imagine what the purpose of Klaatu's visit will be but I faintly hope it will be something like, "It's time for you people to grow up and learn to live together...you're so busy quarrelling over bullshit, you are missing the fact that you're destroying the very world you need to continue to survive."

Sounds like a reasonable change in plot to me.

Why the hell would aliens care if we blow ourselves up or destroy our own planet?

Sounds like a plot-hole to me.

Maybe they're an intergalactic version of GreenPeace?

Hmm. No, leave Keanu as Klaatu, and have AlGore as Gort.........

Yes, but we might sneak into their planet, and continue our backward ways...Think of parallels here on Earth, and CMail me, if you can't figure it out...

Maybe they'll combine the two, in a cost cutting move; Gone With Dr Zhivago.....

I'm not too worried about it. The crap remakes are always pretty much forgotten, and the originals are still there, shiny and beautiful as ever! So far, about the only "remake" that ever seemed to equal it's original, if not surpass it, was John Carpenter's remake of "The Thing." Scary as hell!

But they remade It's a Wonderful Life several times, but nothing beats Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. Jackson remade King Kong, but I've still pulled out the original three or four times, and I have yet to play his version more than once. (I have the Dino DeLaurentic bomb too, but I don't even think I bothered to pull tha plastic off the cover.) Casablanca: remember the 70's remake? (I didn't think so)
Invaders From Mars?  (Hint: it had Karen Black and Louise Fletcher in the remake)

They'll make a few buck on it sure... but I doubt it will make a lasting mark in our minds.

The actual point of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" will be missed by todays audience who has no concept of history.  The movie was a protest of what was going on in the US at that time, The Red Scare, The Unamerican Activities Hearing, Blacklisting, Nuclear Weapons.  Michael Rennie speach at the end of the movie said it all.

You know, there is no such thing as a "remake."  Stories have always been retold and embellished since man began telling stories.  When you go see Hamlet, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, etc, etc. do you expect it to be performed exactly as it was in the 17th Century?  A movie is not different.  It's just a modern medium for telling a story.  Yeah, many of them are shit.  But rejecting a movie because it's a "remake" is just pretentious and silly.

you never know Greedy.

my problem with Hollywood is they're remaking these classics not just for the box office $$$ but to update them for the new generation.
