Yeah it was horrible.  It's set in 1941, and no one in the movie smokes!  WTF

I got my degree in history, and I love movies.  So great topic OP.

I think most Westerns make my nomination.  I love Westerns, but the overwhelming majority of them don't portray the American frontier of the 19th Century at all.  I did like 'Tombstone' and Costner's 'Wyatt Earp'.  Costner kept pretty well to the true events.  'Dances with Wolves' was a beautiful movie, but it was just ridiculous historically.  Another Costner favorite of mine is 'Open Range', and it's not too far off the mark concerning the feuds between free rangers and ranchers.

The most historically accurate movie of recent is 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World' IMO.  I thought the director did a great job with that movie.  I also liked the mutiny on the Bounty  version with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson.  They followed the real events pretty well.

I got the feeling that star wars wasnt quite accurate

kittinSol -> RE: The most inaccurate movies (3/21/2008 3:58:50 PM)

Tart. Then there's Outlaw of Gor - only saw tidbits of it, but it was totally inaccurate: Gor's not like that. I've seen it.

Raechard -> RE: The most inaccurate movies (3/21/2008 4:00:13 PM)

Now you see the problem I have with star wars is that the old ones are the end to the new ones and no one really cares about sitting through 70's films to see how it all ended in the past.

Jurassic park just because we all know dinosaurs were bright pink in colour.

Raechard -> RE: The most inaccurate movies (3/21/2008 4:04:32 PM)

Enemy of the State.

Because in all that time being tracked by satellites never once did a cloud obscure Will Smith’s head?

"The Texas Chainsaw Masscre" was also said to be based on a true story.

A charming little murderous nutcase named Ed Gein, but only loosely based on his story.

Si si, je sais ce que "epouvantable" veut dire.

It means "terrible", "awful", "dreadful" lol.

I think I actually have that on VHS....

OO8OO88O8 -> RE: The most inaccurate movies (3/21/2008 5:32:12 PM)

300 was based on Millers book, which is completely innacurate from the real battle. The movie was spot on, it was Miller's comic that was off target.

Someone said earlier about The Patriot. It was based off Swamp Fox Francis Marion. He used guerrilla tactics against the Brits. The fighting in the South was very, very brutal and seems to be only a footnote in the Revolutionary War. Most of the history seems to be from the Northern battles. I would argue that the battles in the South were possibly more brutal than ones in the North.

If you really want to enjoy 'Outlaw of Gor', watch the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of it.  It's absolutely hillarious.  Oh Lord, I miss that show.

In fact, you can watch it all on youtube.  Here is 1/10:

All Westerns where the Indians are portrayed only as savages.
They probably were savages but they were fighting a good cause.
Defending their homeland

I don't know if you ever got Lone Ranger reruns in the UK, but that is a perfect example of that.  In the show, the Lone Ranger calls his Indian companion "Tonto".  Well that means "stupid" in Spanish.  Tonto calls the Lone Ranger (a white man), "Kemosabe", which means "wise man" essentially in Spanish.  Hmm, no racism there, huh?

Amusingly enough, the TV series Rome is one of the least inaccurate ones.

Not entirely on-topic, but an interesting contrast.

Health,

I'm glad to hear that, because I think it's brilliant, as well as "Deadwood"...
