The Lord of the Rings - the movies were turgid and indigestible, in spite of a few good bits.

Fellowship was good, I didn't like them skipping Tom and the barrows but adding another hour to the film wasn't an option I assume.

Two Towers was bad. Not awful but bad. The Ents didn't look right amongst other things.

Return of the King was awful. Legolas surfing on oliphants at the battle of Minas Tirith? The best scene in all the books, IMO, Eowyn and Merry killing the Witch-King was barely a footnote in the movie.

I hope that someday somebody makes them all again and sticks to the books.

......for me it has to be the aforementioned Dune, ace book - appalling film.......for petes sake, it rained at the end....

It rains at the end of the novel too.

..are you sure? My copy ends with Paul Atreides gaining control of the empire from the Emperor and Jessice pointing out to Chani that a concubine is loved more than the object of a  marriage of convenience........

I agree with blushes. I have an autographed 1st of "Exit to Eden." I read it about once a year. On my primary email, I use a line from it as my sig for email. I LOVE that book.

So, you can imagine my horror at learning that it was going to be thrown into a garbage disposal by the same inept jerk who produced Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. I don't know which insult was worse: the addition of the "comedy relief team of O'Donell and Ackroyd, or the addition of the totally superfluous "diamond heist" subplot. (It was like something Diseny would do for one of those awful "Dexter Riley" college films.) The book deserved someone like the director from "Secretary" making it. Not this club handed moron who, in one interview, said: "Well, you have to dumb things like this down when you want middle America to accept them."

When an "artist" starts out disrespecting his audiance, you know the end result is going to suck!

Oh well, maybe in another 15 years, someone else can re-make it, and do a better job. (It wouldn't take much.)

Dana Delaney is a gorgeous woman, though....

Yeah, that might be the Ultimate Stinker. At least they cut out the scene with Fonzie, when Delaney is preparing to queen him, and he keeps yelling "sit on it! sit on it!"......

Indeed, that's how it ends. I actually have a soft spot for the Dune movie, I don't know why. Perhaps it's the music that I love so much.

In any case, for me the worst worst worst WORST book to movie adaptation is without a doubt Starship Troopers.

My copy is in storage so I'll ask, I know it rains on the capital city at the end of one of the first three books so which one is it?

Was it a Hollywood movie? But I agree, it was about as mind-numbing as one of those RPG games with the hero who looks like an uber-Dom and wears a long flowing dress and sandals.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/22/2008 5:09:53 PM)

Forrest Gump was a brilliant satire and thankfully I read it AFTER, seeing the movie.

Had I read the book first, I may have walked right out of the theatre!

sirsholly -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/22/2008 5:13:58 PM)

i am not watching the mini-series because i am in the middle of the book. It is awesome, Katy.

bipolarber -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/22/2008 5:56:41 PM)

Oh, yeah, almost forgot a couple:

Myra Breckenridge with Raquel Welch

The Tenth Victim with Ursala Andress.

I'd add the original Casino Royale, with David Niven... but although it's a crappy adaptation, it IS a fun movie in its own right.

~FR~
The Clan of the Cave Bear.  (The entire Earth Children Series is fantastic, IMO)
It wasn't even possible and they shouldn't have even tried.  Especially with Daryl Hannah as Ayla.
*Shudder*

Finally, someone else who wasn't impressed.  The first one was so bad I never bothered with the others.

Childhood book - Stuart Little was a great book, the movie is an insult.

Adolescent book - Flowers in the Attic.  I loved the whole series.  The movie was so abominable we all laughed through it.

FatDomDaddy mentioned Forrest Gump.  I never read the book and STILL couldn't finish the movie.

PanthersMom -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/22/2008 9:14:40 PM)

i liked LOTR so much i fell asleep in the theater.  that whole bunch of movies was a waste of money.  i have to agree with most of the books/movies mentioned so far.  "shogun" was garbage.  so was "fatal vision".  i've found that i really prefer to read the books and leave the movies to others, the movies are usually disappointing.

Agreed.

As far as Stephen King's books; doesn't seem possible to make any of his books into movies, that would do the books justice.

One of those "can't git the'a from he'a"

you're right, stephen king's list of dogs is about a mile long.  misery, it, the stand, salem's lot, almost every one of his book-to-films has really been laughable, i can't think of one that was passable, let alone halfway decent!

as far as Stephen  kiing goes.. I liked Carrie. But I saw the movie long before I read the story

Oh I SO agree!! I adore the books (still waiting on the last one. Jean Auel really needs to get her finger out!), but that movie was just tragic.

I loved the book Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy, but the movie was crap. Except for Alan Rickman as the chronically depressed robot. I just LOVE Alan Rickman in anything.[:)]
