you're right, stephen king's list of dogs is about a mile long.  misery, it, the stand, salem's lot, almost every one of his book-to-films has really been laughable, i can't think of one that was passable, let alone halfway decent!

Have to agree here..Shawshank Redemption was an excellent film by King..as was Green Mile.....but also agree that quite a few King novels have been stinkeroos such as The Stand ......Frankly however, I feel that most movies will never come close to a book for the simple reason that we all , as we read ,picture in our own mind as to what is happening ,and an actor may interpret that same thing quite differently than how we would see it...also no movie can get as in depth as a book can, otherwise the movie may get to be as long as 12 hours or more....Tempting

Also, writing allows for the reader to know what is on the minds of the characters, while leaving one to guess, when watching the movie.

John Grisham's "The Client"

The book was freaking awesome

the movie, why why why did they do that to me! That should be an offense punishable by imprisonment! lol.

popeye1250 -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/22/2008 11:22:15 PM)

Anything with Tom Cruise in it.
And a bunch of others, gee, there's so many these last few years.

slavejale -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/22/2008 11:24:37 PM)

well not ANYTHING with Tom Crusie, i think he has played in a few good movies. I have to think of them and post later. *chuckles*\\

well wishes to All and all.

Gotta agree with you there.

Okay hold up

The Last Samuari  I HATE Cruise but in that movie it seemed he at very least respected the role and you could tell it in the film.

It was a good movie but I'm not sure if it was a Book first or of the book came out with the movie but both were good.

And again I F***ING HATE TOM CRUISE but I have to give credit where it is due.

The Clan of the Cave Bear.  (The entire Earth Children Series is fantastic, IMO)
It wasn't even possible and they shouldn't have even tried.  Especially with Daryl Hannah as Ayla.
*Shudder*

Oh I SO agree!! I adore the books (still waiting on the last one. Jean Auel really needs to get her finger out!), but that movie was just tragic.

I loved the book Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy, but the movie was crap. Except for Alan Rickman as the chronically depressed robot. I just LOVE Alan Rickman in anything.[:)]

Ooh...I love Alan Rickman as well...I can't tell you how many Severus Snape fantasies I have...[sm=tongue.gif]

I actually found "Forrest Gump" to be a better film than the book...I just didn't think Winston Groom came across as having much respect for the character.

RCdc -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/23/2008 9:29:00 AM)

This is Darcy

My vote here goes to The Beach. The book was superb, but somehow they managed to lose the heart and soul of the story in the movie, and Leo DiCaprio was just the wrong choice for the lead.

And another - Along Came A Spider. The James Patterson book was brilliant (and remains his best in my opinion) but the film was dire.

outlier -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/23/2008 9:52:33 AM)

First, I want to thank everyone for their contributions and say that I look
forward to more.  I promised to return with my contribution later so here it is.
I am no movie expert so this is, as many here are, a very personal choice.

A writer named E.K.Gann had several best sellers during the fifties and
early sixties.  Probably best known for The High and The Mighty a book
that became a decent John Wayne movie.  E.K.Gann actually was a retired
airline pilot.  He also wrote Island In The Sky, which made it to the screen
relatively unscathed.  But I think his best book was
Fate Is The Hunter.

It is a series of autobiographical short stories in cronological order.  It specifically
recounts his own list of personal close calls.  All told as first person experiences.

He was a pilot from the era of the DC2's and DC3's through the war and then
up until the 4 engine propeller planes.  Each chapter is one story, and each gives
time for musing and observations.  Even though you know he survived each
episode the quality of his storytelling is such that you are there with him.
The fact that you know he lived them seems to make them more present,
more real, it intensifies the tension it does not negate it.  From flying over
frozen wastes to flying over the Amazon, he takes you there.

Flying over the Amazon he gets up, goes behind the cockpit bulkhead to get a chart
and muses about the beauty of the charts and how practical things can also be aesthetic,
and thereby be better at both.  I forgot this for years until I went to an exhibit of the
works from the National Living Treasures of Japan.  There contemplating the baskets
wolven cloth and other seeming mundane items which were revered for their heritage
and quality I remembered that passage from the book.  And then was drawn back to the
book to see it with more experienced eyes.  And a renewed awarness of how much
richer life can be if/when you see the value of seeming everyday things very well done.

This musing is interrupted by the oil cap for the motor blowing off of the wing!  He
immediately dives forward pushes the copilot aside and kills the motor before the
seized engine tears the wing off plunging them to their death.  They turn around and
return to the airport on one motor.   If he had not stopped by the window to
contemplate the beauty of this everyday item, he would not be alive.

The original cover was a raptor coming down talons extended.
Under the talons it said:
Run as fast as you will
                                              Escape if you can
                                              You are the quarry
                                              Fate Is The Hunter

The dedication was to a list of "Comrades with wings folded forever"  A special book.

Hollywood immediately knew what was wrong with this best seller.  No woman for the
pilot.  So they kept the title, threw out the meaning and value and turned it into a board room melodrama.  Now an airline has had a crash.  An airline executive is convienced of his buddy's, the dead pilot's innocence.  He risks his career to protect the reputation of  the ever faithful Jack Savage (not kidding).   He is aided by the only survivor, the love
interest, the stewardess.  Enough said.

Thanks again to everyone for your contributions.
I now have some new books to reconsider.

I thought The Stand was an outstanding adaptation and very well cast.

It should be TV Mini Series 101 on how to do the genere correctly.

I have sad news for you!  Word on the street is that she will do 7 books since she won't get it all into the original six that were outlined.  I am sure she will not be around to ever finish this series.  10 years between publications is a bit much.  I know she does a lot of research, but honestly!

Don't forget the often overlooked Pet Semetary, Carrie, Christine, and Cujo. Of those, I only really liked Pet Semetary.

Now for those that have seen it, is the adaptation of "A Scanner Darkly" any good? I'm a big fan of the book, but have yet to see the movie, however I'm intrigued by the animation style, and it looks like the movie is doing its darndest to do justice to the book.

SteelofUtah -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/24/2008 7:03:13 AM)

A scanner Darkly was INTERESTING However I never read the Book.

I was more interested in the way the society was described and how the situations worked. Basically if you ever did Meth this movie will have lots of places where you can relate.

Being a recovering addict there were many places it made my skin crawl.

The animation was strange. It was different I don't have the movie on my top ten or 50 for that matter but it was interesting.

soul2share -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/24/2008 9:27:59 AM)

Agreed.

As far as Stephen King's books; doesn't seem possible to make any of his books into movies, that would do the books justice.

I couldn't agree more about King's novels.....when I read "dreamcatcher", I thought that it would make an awesome movie....even had Morgan Freeman in it, but as the Owen character...didn't think he was all that good as the Kurtz/Curtis character.  Anyway, the only movies of his that were still somewhat true to form are the short stories that he wrote the screenplays for.  His are probably the only books that I've gone to see the movies for...usually, for any others, if I read the book, I don't usually go to the movie....if I see the movie, I'm less likely to read the book, mainly because I know I'm going to be disappointed in one way or another.

The only other books I'll go see the movies for are anything John Grisham.....they did tend to stick to the books as they were written.

Personally, I read much more than I go to movies.....I devour books, and re-read them to the point of wering out copies...I've gone thru 2 of "The Shining", "Insomnia", "The Stand" and the above mentioned "Dreamcatcher".  BTW, did I happen to mention that Steven King is my favorite author?

RCdc -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/24/2008 10:54:45 AM)

This is Darcy

I'm a huge King fan, but agree that in the vast majority of cases the film versions fall flat. Interestingly, though, those that I do think have worked - Shawshank, Misery, Stand By Me, Dolores Claiborne - are the ones without any hint of the supernatural whatsoever.
