I was so busy snarking at Raymond I forgot to actually answer the thread.... If there is a picture, I look at the expression. My mom has this thing about "mean eyes" and she is SO RIGHT. I like to see someone looking pleasant and natural. The ones that look angry or unhappy generally don't get mail from me. And what is teh DEAL with these pics of the bizarre body hair? And the pics of the dildo collections?

Anyway. Nice expression, and an indication of who that person IS, and what they are looking for, be it play, cheap one-time encounters, or true love. Yes, spelling counts. I can understand that not everyone is out to write a novel, but I do want something more than a one liner about "available for use". Show me the sense of humor, and the intellect.

What can i say... day-to-day life is woefully thin on dildo collections, and thick on body hair.

Almost all my profile perving starts on the boards, so there are a few factors involved. Photo-wise, happy Dommes, or pretty much any Goth or "freaky-lookin'" person gets my attention. Signatures referencing things of interest to me. And, more subjectively, a general sense that the person is bringing something unique to the table, intellectually speaking.

A smile..pure and simple.If you are smiling,the eyes follow.I could care less about body type and how long you have been at this and all that crud.Show me some sign of brain activity.While i have listed interests..i would rather only talk about everyday life and be able to make one laugh and sort of be allowed to let my hair down a bit(what is left of it of course).I don't believe a Domina would lose her edge if she allowed just normal behavior but with respect..no potty mouth or sailor talk.Lastly..i have read some profiles that refer to submissives by scum and even worse.To those of you with that particular attitude,i suggest you go back to finishing school.

Caveat; not a domme. But I get the feeling I'm the only person who doesn't care about a partner's writing skills. People with superb literary skills are likely to work in a profession that demands that; editor, journalist, advertising, psychology etc. These aren't people who usually have great how-to skills. A guy who can fix your car or remodel your bathroom is usually not someone who writes fluid prose. If you want those skills, you have to accept that they come with a different package.

That's a good point. My father is a great example of this, and i've also noticed it on the automotive boards i'm on. There are guys that are tremendous sources of knowledge, but sometimes you have to read through their posts a couple of times to figure out exactly what they're saying. It's just an unfortunate fact of the medium that if you can't express yourself well, it can be easy to get written off as noise. Particularly since there are also a lot of people who don't express themselves well, and also don't seem to have other any redeeming qualities

I know of a man who is fairly intelligent and articulate, and his expression in the online medium does not do him justice, which I have come to attribute to slow typing speed. Thus, I have come to think that online writing skills depend on both command of language and command of keyboard. Still, proficieny in language and familiarity with computers are positive indicators based on what is important to me. Intelligence is expressed in many ways and I think proficieny in language with coherent expression represents one form of intelligence, which is a positive indicator in the mix of things.

As for the point about how-to skills, I think the dichotomy you describe between proficiency in language or trade skills is most likely to result from professional path chosen, which is more likely to emphasize one over the other. You make a similar point. That said, I think the two types of skills can coexist.

Sure, the how-to skills might be attractive for whatever role of masculinity they project. That aside, I think the how-to skills are more important if one is seeking a service only relationship. If one is seeking a relationship based on a broader social connection, I think proficieny in language as an indicator of intelligence, and articulate expression for effective communication matter more. Fixing a car or remodeling a bathroom are services that can be easily hired whereas the same cannot be said of a social connection.

That is an excellent point, Des, and one of the reasons I look to the writing skill is that I have a list of professional credentials a yard long, and experience tells me that educational parity is important in long lasting relationships. I love blue collar guys and I respect skilled trades, but I don't want someone who will be uncomfortable around me and my friends and colleagues. (and I am not equating education and intelligence here, either! just matching skills)

I'm not looking currently, but I'm lurking, so things catch my eye either way. Loosely, I suppose I'm drawn in by interesting people - people who are witty, intelligent, and have a distictive personality that doesn't have any glaringly negative traits (mean or desperate or vapidly trying to be what they think I want rather than what they are, ew.) I like it when people just are who they are, genuinely. A good sense of humor is great.

If someone is filthy hot, it helps, but there's a difference between that and badly taken pictures of genitilia or MUSCLES OH LOOK I'M SO MUSCULAR or pasty flabby ass. No thanks move along.

Totally easily distracted by pretty smiles and eyes and expression. Actually, I tend to be drawn in by motorcycles as well (to echo an earlier sentiment) which I suppose is just a love of mine.

Attitude/personality. Pictures of course get my attention...as long as they are non lifestyle related. Part of the fun is imagining that person doing all that they proclaim...without seeing a picture of them in the act.

I have a serious hang up on necks, shoulders and hands. *purrs in thought*

It's a good point, but considering it is a written medium, spell check isn't such a bad option.

I've been thinking over the subject these past couple of days while reading the responses. I still go back to My default answer that was in My head when it was originated. Nothing catches My eye more than the written word in reply to some of the forum questions. This is especially true if I find a commonality in a line of thinking. For every ten profiles that I look at due to something that was said on the boards, I might look at one because the picture interested Me in some way. The ratio is probably higher than that, but it was an easy estimate.
