I always figured Ole Bill knew how to put asses in seats by allowing everybody to interpret things their own way. Were there bible thumpers seeing the destruction of Kate in God ordained fashion? Yep. Were there "sophisticated" people who saw it as an analogy to their own BDSM activities? yep. Were there women who saw it as a parable on the advantage of pointing the viciousness away from the husband? Sure. Dude made sure to never ever fully accept any point of view it was his genius. If he had been a politician, on the other hand, we would have never heard of him. Personally I have always prefered this play done as very low brow comedy since he always included a dirty point of view in all his plays.
