Of course, just because someone has "done" something in real life doesn't mean they're any good at it. [:D]

But at least it puts them one up over a jerk off with a computer and a box of kleenexes. [;)]

I'm the "Kleenexpert." [:D]

If you think that's funny-try going into a  gorean chat room with the nick "Bator" and see what ensues.

vield -> RE: What makes you an "Expert" (3/27/2008 9:10:33 AM)

I havee not replied to a post for awhile due to lack of time, but this one caught my interest.

As usual there will be a lot of controversy about this label, as in kinky life or in vanilla life "expert" is not always a term many will rate the same way others do.

There  are skills where one gets an expert rating through testing. There are skills where a person gets an expert rating through education or training.

In the profile item listings my thought is that this is like most forms of labeling in life, in that only the label we self apply to our forehead is accurate, and even then it does not mean anyone else will understand what the term means to you without a personal discussion.

I know that many, many years of practice and research and learning makes me someone whose advice is often sought, and one whose toys are valued, and whose friendship is cherished.

I know I am expert in playing with some toys hard and with others softly. This does NOT mean I am an expert in playing with YOU until we have spent some time playing together. I know and admit that some toys I know how to play with but have little interest in giving or getting that play, while others I may understand but may have little skill with. It is unlikely I would call myself expert with an unfamiliar toy. That will NOT prevent others who watch that scene for considering me as expert.

HalloweenWhite -> RE: What makes you an "Expert" (3/27/2008 9:31:07 AM)

As you rightly point out there are no degrees in BDSM that can be applied for or completed, it's more about interpretation. If S/someone has been involved in an activity for a considerable amount of time, can confidently and competantly demonstrate this skill to others, as well as show a good degree of background knowledge about the activity as well as solve problems for others starting out learning that same skill/ability, then they may be considered an expert.

If it's self applied, does that mean its not recognised by O/others?.I'm not sure I get your definition of "Self applied".

IronBear -> RE: What makes you an "Expert" (3/27/2008 2:31:26 PM)

Mind you there is a world of difference between being an expert and havind some expertise (theory and practial knowledge) of something at what ever level it is refered to. Most of us have some form of expertise in a few things which doesn't make us experts.

sweetwenchie -> RE: What makes you an "Expert" (3/27/2008 2:35:15 PM)

i am going to have to double check, but i believe the only things i marked myself an expert  in is horror flicks and vibrators [8D]

colouredin -> RE: What makes you an "Expert" (3/27/2008 3:22:37 PM)

*I havent read anything other than the op cos I am lazy and the expert thing always makes me giggle*

When I see expert written i kinda role my eyes, expert in vibrators, have they invented them? done extensive research? Or just used them a few times. And why would I want to be with an expert in collars, surely that implies they collar a lot of people, doesnt really seem that they care much about the symbolism. I kinda take it with a pinch of salt to be fair.

Real_Trouble -> RE: What makes you an "Expert" (3/27/2008 3:48:49 PM)

Part of what kills me about the expert commentary is that for many of these things, there is no well-defined standard of competence nor certification process.  I mean, in many fields, experts are possibly the product of luck and circumstance, but with regard to the "technical" skills of BDSM, there's still no way to determine actual in-practice ability without serious observation and comparison.

In good news, at least some of the other more banal stuff might be quantifiable.

looks up from "The Spaniard's Virgin"....just as Paulo does something unspeakably vanilla to Nancy's "womanly core" .... sorry ..what was that colouredin?

A standard length Mills & Boon is 189 pages exactly ... by page 11 I can successfully predict the outcome of the entire novel. I can read a standard length M&B in a little over an hour, less if its got lots of sex in it.

One very famous Mills & Boon authoress, Charlotte Lamb, is clearly into BDSM.. I used to just think it was me .. but Jesus H Christ.. in the last one .. the hero actually tied the girl up until she agreed to sleep with himand then marry him *fans self* ..lucky bitch

see ... I told Y'all I was vanilla really
