Most of our sales people know that we do a lot of theatrical and haunted house work... so they never bat an eye over our odd hardware purchases.

However, once my husband & his best friend were going to do a life cast and for some unknown reason, they went to get a few supplies at Walmart in the middle of the night.  These included gauze bandages, cotton balls, vasoline and KY jelly in the econo pacs.  Both my husband and his friend are long haired males.  They got some odd looks.

Once, at a party at my house, my equestrian friend saw my crop lying next to the computer.  She picked it up and said "Oh!  I didn't know that you rode.  But, this is a punisher!  You should NEVER use this on a horse."  Then she noticed the cam on top of the computer, looked back at the crop, turned bright red and dropped the crop like it had burned her.

Once had to go to a lingerie/ toy store to get a handcuff key. While travelling I was staying at a hotel and had my uniform in the car, which I put on along with my cuff in the room. Then I realized I had to wrong key so I phoned a local store and the clerk said come over, they had some. After getting there, and after stares and laughs, we found their keys were different. She called a friend who came over and had the right one. Such customer service so I bought several things there. My predicament didn't even phase the sales girl though, all in a day's work she said.

I have found that BDSM people are everywhere, and they'll tease you. Like the salesman at Lowes I finally met at a play party?

Anyway, I always tell them I'm an artist in grad school doing an installation and that covers any number of things bought in bulk by a small woman in heels. Nothing but helpful if that's what it is - even climbing gear salespeople get MFA's and want to help us!

When they ask what you're building- tell them if you could say it in words you'd be a writer, not a maker of things... (Picasso quote)

Malemaid, people with cuff keys are everywhere!  Once, at a convention, an odd little man, the friend of a friend... pulled out his cuffs in the lobby and asked me "Do you want to see a magic trick?"  Most armature magicians are dreadful... sort of like the 'artists' and 'writers' that hang out at conventions.  They are mostly irksome, but I wasn't doing anything so I said "Sure."   He asked me to hold out my hands.  When I did, he put the cuffs on me.  I stood there for a heart beat and then asked, "So what's the trick?"  He said "You have to give me a kiss to get out!"  To which I replied "Bullshit" and walked away wearing his cuffs.

I went straight down the hall to the dealer's room and asked the first male vendor, "Do you have a key?"  He did not, but the next one overheard and pulled his key ring out of his pocket.  Tucked in with his house and car keys was the familiar little key.  He reached over his table and freed me.  I thanked him and replied "No service to great or to small for a lady."  I explained to him what had happened then told him that he should receive the kiss as payment... walked around the table and gave him one of my infamous kisses... the kind that makes men weak in the knees.

I then strolled back to the lobby and found the wormy little 'magician' sitting with other friends.  I held out the opened cuffs and gave him 'the look'... the one that peals paint... and told him very quietly "Never do that again."  He whimpered "Yes, ma'am."

These stories are making me a little more comfortable buying things for my own projects. I laughed so hard at some of these. It makes me feel so much better knowing others too have issues such as these.

A buddy taught me leatherwork, and we used to go shopping at the Leather Factory at least once a week, sometimes more. The store manager and her husband asked us what we were making with all the leather we were purchasing (He makes floggers, I make cuffs, collars, blindfolds, and strap-on's) and my buddy kept telling them they didn't want to know, but they kept asking. So after about 6 months of this, my buddy finally looked at the managers husband and says, "I make whips, he makes bondage stuff". The guys eyes widened a little, and he told my buddy to come to the back of the store. There he pulled out a trunk full of leather bondage gear, along with single tails, and assorted floggers.  Turns out the guy had been a leatherman in Cali for over 25 years, and quit when he came to utah as he didn't think there was any kind of scene, and he settled down and married a vanilla woman.  So from there on out, we got all kinds of suggestions and help that made other customers scratch their heads trying to figure out what was going on.

Faery, i actually accidently outed my at the time gf, now my wife, to my mother that way. We were shopping in an asian specialty store together, talking, when, without thinking, i picked up an interesting bamboo spatula, smacked my palm with it, and made a hmm, nice, noise.  She was staring at me, and i blushed, turned red, and said, Turtle would like it.   Of course, it was just revenge for a few times that she had mentioned things her own boyfriend had done that she enjoyed.

The first time i bought something outside of a adult story was at Tractor Supply. i went there and bought a crop.  How funny it was too. There i stood in line the ONLY female with only a crop in her hand. No one said a thing, but i did get a couple looks.

I went to a carboot sale one summer ages ago. There I was just browsing the stalls when I spotted, amongst the jigaws puzzles, a leather flogger and 2 handmade leather collars. I didn't think anyone had noticed my involuntary haitus til I felt I was being watched. Sure enough there was the stall owner just staring at me with a smile on his face. I turned away ASAP glowing!

When I went into PetSmart to get new chain collar, 18", since thats what he wears... I wasnt really thinking about the answers when the cashier was talking to me. I was holding the chain up, absently in check out, and looped it around my own neck to see if it would be long enough. She didnt seem to skip a beat with that, its a pretty common practice from what I gather. Though while she was ringing me up, she did ask about my pet.I said I didnt think Fido would fit it, but I needed it for something else. She asked if I wanted some help finding one that would fit Fido, and I said no... he's a fish.

She was blinking and looking after me as I left.

I accidentally caused the owner of a small discount store to stop stocking the wonderfully inexpensive leather dog collars she had been stocking for some time.

On my fourth visit, buying her out of her stock, she asked how many dogs did I have.
Only then did the poor short sighted deary look closer and realise that I was wearing one of her collars.

Next time I visited, the leather had gone missing.

Hi all, I bought some 'vet wrap' at a local farm/tack supply store, the cashier asked 'who are you going to use that on?' (I was not going to say 'me'.) I did not have a made up answer and stumbled around with ' well.. I have a cat but... I am not going to use it on the cat, I am going to make something out of it'.  At a local grocery store(where I worked) I bought 4 big leather dog collars, the cashier started to ask questions, I said they are for Christmas presents and they were on sale too.  The people at the local  big pet supply place know I am a deviant, they don't even bother asking me stuff anymore, when I bought  a shock collar, 3 sizes of 2 dog leads, metal combs etc.  I have a planned excuse, 'it is for a science project, for my neice.'   At the local Walmart I am lucky if I can get a cashier to tell me the total, let alone asking questions.

Kind of off topic, but along the same lines:

I had a friend once who bought a honkin' bottle of stage blood at a local costume shop. The cashier asked him if he needed a bag and he just shook his head and told them, 'Nah, I'll drink it in the car.'

I was in a pet store in Fort lauderdale, FL, looking a dog dollars and leashes, I with my dom at the time and we were contemplating over which dog collars he liked for me.  We picked the one out that he liked the most and then I put it up to my neck and tried to see if it would fit, it didn't.    So we asked the worker in the store if they had it in a larger size and they did.  When he brought out the larger size, I grabbed it from his hands and started to try it on, wrapping it around my neck.  It fit and we bought it along with a leash.   The store clerk just stared with his eyes wide open and mouth just dropped, he turned red as a beat and just said "OOOOOOOOOOOOOK"   I didnt really care, but I thought it made for a funny story.

Then there's the other side of this. One day I went into Madame S, in San Francisco. I was surprised to find Paige, the manager, behind the register; usually she's in her office in back and has others on the sales floor. I asked "where are all your salespeople?". Paige tosses off the line, "Oh, they're in dildo training".

Once I took my pony girl to a large agriculture store to find her a bridle.  As we were looking, we got separated.  I turn the next corner and there she is in the middle of everything with a bridle already in her mouth.  Still remember the looks.  She did have a beautiful silky long black mane though.  Ah memories...
